Report: UGO Close to Acquiring 1UP

7
According to a report by Joystiq, UGO Entertainment is in talks to purchase the majority of Ziff Davis Media's 1UP Network, including 1UP.com, GameVideos.com and MyCheats.com.

The talks are said to be "very advanced," with the 1UP editorial staff reportedly being informed of the sale on Tuesday.

The story, sourced from anonymous tipsters within Ziff Davis, notes that UGO will not likely re-brand the purchased sites under the UGO Entertainment label.

The news does not bode well for the print arm of 1UP, Electronic Gaming Monthly, which UGO is apparently not interested in buying. The New York Times reported last month that Ziff Davis CEO Jason Young was considering closing EGM due to declining profit margins.

Download provider Filefront.com was also singled out as one branch that UGO is uninterested in picking up with the deal.

    NOOOOO!!!!!! I hate UGO!!!

Argh!!! The 1UP are one of the few groups of game journalists I actually like! Between them, Shack, and Blue I get all the gaming news I need.

Ah well, at least it isn't IGN or Gamespot or Gamespy... the horror... the horror....

Sheesh, what's with the hate of those sites. I think they're fine. Gamespy has been a personal favorite of mine for a long time though they don't have the same fanbase such as IGN or Gamespot.

Too bad, I really liked EGM, more so than Gamer Informer. Hope they find someway to work things out.

First, it's game informer, not gamer informer, and second, IGN, gamespot and gamespy are all advertisement nightmares loaded with banner ads, clickthrough ads, flash ads and every other kind of ad you can think of. Bluesnews used to be awesome, then UGO bought it and now it's a spam nightmare.

This post is cull of intelligence and correctness.

Gamespy is almost singularly responsible for gaming news turning to giant ad banners of death. They also shut down the best file mirror of the old day, ftp.cdrom.com....

It looks like UGO wants to follow suit and get FileFront shut down. I guess community centered file hosting networks are a thing of the past now. UGOs own file download services are not completely terrible, but they are far worse than FileFront is.
