why does it feel like they are shoehorning in a plot to what should have been a simple bug-for-all game?

I almost wish there wasn't a narrative at all, keep it mysterious and creepy. or give the bugs their own strange body language..

  I'd argue that if there was no narrative of any kind then mysterious and creepy would be out of the question. It needs at least some context.
  
  I don't really know anything about this game but if the story is kept pretty ambiguous and disconnected then it could work really well.
