Sony CEO Says PS3 Back on Track

30
Sony USA chief executive Howard Stringer described the company as having turned a page with the PlayStation 3's market woes at this week's D: All Things Digital conference in Carlsbad, California.

According to Gamasutra, the executive noted that while excessive revenue is still beyond the PS3's reach, but things are moving swiftly upwards for the once ailing console.

"We're coming along, I think," he said. "Culturally, the word 'profit' is not high on anybody's agenda in Japan, and we've turned that around. We closed our 5 percent margins... There's a sort of sense of, we're climbing up the mountain. We're nowhere near the top, but we're halfway up... The level of competence is growing, which is the main thing."

Stringer added that competing in so many realms of digital entertainment has proved a challenge for the company. Before its release, the PS3 was touted as an all-in-one digital media set-top box, capable of playing games, Blu-ray movie discs, and featuring an array of downloadable content.

"We're a giant department store competing with many companies that are really skillful boutiques," said Stringer.

The PS3 is matching or outselling the 360 in nearly all regions. That sounds like "back on track" to me. It's a much better claim than saying they are the "Worldwide console leader, Wii excluded".

Actually, yes it is. It is behind in total unit sales, but launching a year to a year and a half later is bound to do that.

I get the feeling he would have responded that way even if I specified month to month. Some people don't really research these things before posting and according to The Intertroll the PS3 sells exactly 0 units per week.

Folklore looked amazing to me, but I tried the demo and was underwhelmed. It looked to be something in the vein of The Longest Journey from the trailers and reviews I'd seen, but in reality it was pretty poor. The dialogue was uninspired and none of it was voiced, and the story seemed pretty bland for all the intrigue I'd felt reading about it. The graphics and gameplay were pretty good but that's not what had interested me about it.

Obviously this was only a demo so it might not be very representative of the finished article, but It was enough to put me off it. Maybe try it out for yourself before thinking any more about purchasing it?

You misspelled "First post". Or was your ignorant rant supposed to have any content? I think there's a reasonable point in saying that the PS3 is doing better now. Some fanboys will always curse immediately when a console they don't like gets mentioned.

The PSN did not die due to GTA4, they had issues with GTA4 is all. Nobody is claiming the PS3 is better than the 360. Compared to it's first year (last year), it's doing much better and has alot of great things right around the corner. You sound kinda angry that someone would even claim the PS3 was a half decent gaming machine.

yea, if anything, GAMESPY's server's failed. And I never had a problem with it regardless, so it wasn't THAT bad obviously. I played tons of multiplayer the first week

And what is this "huge pile" of good 360 exclusives? I can count about 5 maybe, but "huge pile"? That's a stretch, much like the rest of your statements.

PSN was absolutely fine from GTAIV traffic.. It was GameSpy that went down. The stats being reset are in GameSpy's field, too, but that seems to have been fixed as well, since I haven't had a problem with my stats being reset in weeks.
