Sony Claims GTA 4 DLC Likely on PS3

26
Though Microsoft has lined up two exclusive downloadable episodes for the Xbox 360 edition of Grand Theft Auto IV, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves is optimistic that the PlayStation 3 version will eventually receive some form of downloadable content as well.

"Well I think you probably will see [GTA 4 DLC on PS3]," Reeves told VideoGamer. "It's just that a deal obviously was struck between Microsoft and Take Two to do that, and if that's what they want to do, I think that's the last shot they have."

Reeve's underhanded comment is most likely referring to Sony's declaration that the PlayStation 3 has now outsold the Xbox 360 in Europe, though the Xbox 360 edition of GTA 4 sold 20% more than the PlayStation 3 version in the UK.

Few details have been revealed about the two Xbox 360-exclusive downloadable episodes, though the first is expected to arrive before November. Rumors have suggested that the content may go so far as to include entirely new cities.

Yeah no shit, its obvious it was a bidding war and MS just shelled out more. That doesn't mean they are better or they are desperate, it just means they paid more, big deal.

From what Rockstar said around the time of the announcement, Sony were too busy looking up their own arses to even return Rockstar's phonecalls and it was that which led them, a developer who were previously focused on Sony's hardware, to do a deal with Microsoft.

At the time Sony even said that the GTA franchise was old hat and not important to gamers anymore, which was clearly bullshit at the time and is even more clearly bullshit now. Just another lie that Sony had to do a U-turn on, like the lie that rumble was a last-gen feature which nobody wanted.

"There's no question that having the Grand Theft Auto franchise helped us a lot and helped us sell some units, but I don't think the battle would be any different with or without Grand Theft Auto.

If you look at our first-party library and the franchises that we've brought to market over the course of PlayStation 2, we have a very formidable first-party library of exclusive software that will help define us."

He goes on to mention such first-party system-sellers as Resistance (meh), Warhawk (I don't see much buzz about that at all and wasn't compelled to buy it for my PS3), Gran Turismo (still doesn't have a full game out), Ratchet & Clank (fair enough, that is out and some people really like it), and God of War (I'm sure that will be good but it's still not out yet).

Yeah, I'm waiting for the next God of War before I take the PS3 plunge.

I was just coming in to ask that. What does that even mean? He's talking like the 360 wasn't on the market a year before them and doesn't already have an established market. What is that all about?

ia, but it's possible rockstar will have some DLC that isn't exclusive. it may or may not be as big or as good as the exclusive stuff, i could have sworn they've said in the past that the PS3 will have DLC too, so it's not like a bald-faced lie.

i mostly mean "was that a threat?!"

It makes no sense if it was due to both companies hurting if there was no ps3 version of their next game

Sounds more like a threat against Rockstar. That if they don't strike a deal with Sony, they'll be snubbed out of any easy releases and promotions of future GTA games on their consoles.
