Wii Sales Triple PS3 Numbers in Japan

5
Japanese sales of the Wii in August were three times that of the PlayStation 3, according to research firm Enterbrain. Unsurprisingly, the Wii also sold nearly 22 times the number of the Xbox 360 consoles in the country.

The 245,653 Wii consoles moved during the month were actually the least amount of Wii consoles sold since launch, a nearly 40% drop in sales from July's 396,752 units sold. Though both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sales dropped off during August as well, by 11% and 37%, respectively.

The number brings year-to-date sales of the Wii in Japan to 2,417,410 units, with the PS3 at 677,082 and Xbox 360 at 151,823.

The 360 is not doing that bad in Europe either. The price drops should help the PS3 and 360, but if Nintendo is able to mass produce the Wii...

Well, and the head start. That basically guarantees at this point that Microsoft will hold a commanding lead over PS3, which is probably more important to Microsoft than beating the Wii, even though obviously any of the three companies would like to lead in overall sales. The Japanese market isn't as huge a factor as it once was, since now even many Japanese publishers are going multiplatform, but it is still a factor and it will be interesting to see how it contributes long term.
