Ultima Online Revamp in the Works

Electronic Arts' official Ultima Online website has been updated with a brief letter revealing some major revisions to the long running MMO Ultima Online, first released by Origin in 1997. So far, the main changes seem to be primarily visual, with revamped graphics and a revised interface. Players will retain all of their characters, items, and real estate. The full breadth of the changes and additions is expected to be revealed by the end of 2006. Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn, as the project is entitled, is set to launch some time in 2007. EA released three screenshots previewing the game's new look. The announcement letter indicated that while the minimum system requirements for the game will raise as a result of the changes, they will still be low compared to other modern MMOs on the market.

This June, EA's recently acquired subsidiary Mythic Entertainment (Warhammer Online, Dark Age of Camelot) announced that it will be assisting the Ultima Online team in some capacity. It is likely that this announcement is related to the Kingdom Reborn project.
