    Maybe Valve shouldn't sell the source engine to any developer who wants to buy it. Like id Software, which sell their engine to A++ developers.

      Wha??? id sells to practicallly anyone that buys. They're just so expensive that only AAA developers can afford them usually. And if you consider Ritual to be a sub-AAA developer, you need to have your head checked.

        it's pretty common knowledge id doesn't sell their engine to everybody... I remember a thread about that topic here on shacknews, but can't find it right now.

        Do you think Source is offered for less than 500000? I think both, D3 and Source, are somewhere around 500000.

          Yeah the way the story is told, Valve had to work pretty hard to convince them to let them license the Quake engine. Anyway ... stop trolling needlessly. There's nowt wrong with these screens, as long as you aren't dumb enough to take them as finished product.

          Yeah I remember back when the licensing thing was new PC Gamer had an article stating how Hexen II was the only Quake-engine game (other than Quake) released whereas the Unreal engine had a dozen or so about to be released.

          Problem is a lot of Unreal-engine games stunk (that Klingon one, anyone? Oh and the deer hunting game) and a lot of Quake-engine games went on to be quite good.

          But yeah the Quake engine had its share of Daikatanas

          I think it's about 1 million + some % on final sales.

        negative ghostrider. It's been talked about a few times they've only licensed doom3 to a handfull of developers. In fact a shacker had a post saying how an old school doom/quake guy who used to make mods got funding to make a game and he approached id about buying Doom3. They turned him down even though he had money to buy it. He was pissed because his whole life he was a big id fan and really wanted to work with their tech.

          Yeah but I think there was more to that though, wasn't there? I think he was working for someone id had "blacklisted" or something.

        as well as Elite Force II, also American McGee's Alice used the enhanced Q3 engine modded by Ritual (UberEngine, IIRC)

      I wouldn't consider Raven an A++ developer.
