Quake 3 a big failure!

... and male gamers "want to be on top".

At least, according to an interview with some people at Gamasutra.

"My biggest failure was Quake 3", Willits said. "The game offered perfect multiplayer for hardcore players. In fact, they're still playing it. But the more casual gamers, and other people who actually have money, found playing next to impossible."

its failure for me because i never came close to logging the hours in q3 as i did with q1 and q2, which were an unhealthyamount of hours.

Same, and I would consider myself a hardcore fps player, but I'm just pretty sick of DM, and none of the Quake 3 mods really got my attention. Quake 1 I played TF for 2+ years.

yep.. Q3 was alright but I much prefered Q2. Mainly I liked LMCTF for Q2 that was such a fun CTF mod.

Q1 with QW and QWTF was the most I've ever spent, but Q2 coming close with Q2RA2 and Lithium and similiar

It was a big failure because it was absolutely outclassed by UT...

Q2JB & Devastation Q2, spent a stupid amount of time playing those. Played Q3 probably about 5 hours total online, oddly enough I probably just played bots more than online. Cool game, just never got hooked in.

Yup. I spent more time (individually) with Action Quake 2, Action Half-Life and TFC then I ever did with Q3. And it didn't help that the UT demo was simply more fun then the Q3 demo.

I feel the same but I wouldn't say failure. Thats the thing with Quake. When you first experience it you get so engulfed in the gameplay and truly appreciate it. However if you started with Q1, Q2 prolly left a sour taste in your mouth. If you started with Q1 or Q2 then Q3 just didn't offer anything new or exciting. Its the same good old Quake just not as exciting as the first time.

I'm sure the first timers loved it.

I have to chime in here and agree... I played Q1/Q2 a LOT more than Q3... Q3 just never grabbed me.... When I heard they were going to model Q4 after Q3's multiplayer I was kinda sad...
