A new trend is rising in the games industry that effectively cuts out the people who write about it. Just in the past few weeks, both Microsoft and Electronic Arts revealed that instead of announcing their latest projects at a ritzy press conference, they'll give out the first details directly to consumers via television. As you are aware, Microsoft will first show the Xbox 360 on MTV during a 30-minute special. Similarly, EA has decided to show the first trailer for the next-gen Madden this Saturday during the first hour of the NFL Draft.

CNN's Chris Morris takes a look at this trend in his latest Game Over column and also analyzes the risks and rewards of pulling off such a stunt as well as the past successes of this methodology.
