Mobile review: Sid Meier's Ace Patrol

Firaxis and 2K Games have been busy with Apple's iOS platform. On top of Haunted Hollow, the studio behind XCOM: Enemy Unknown has released another free-to-play game for Apple's mobile devices. This one comes from Sid Meier and ventures to the days of World War I. Sid Meier's Ace Patrol is a turn-based strategy game that mixes in enough RPG elements to make you want to fly beyond the free-to-play horizon.

Nintendo wins appeal in Wii patent dispute

In January, the International Trade Commission said that Motiva was only using its motion control patents to sue, and ruled in favor of the Nintendo. The Court of Appeals decision upheld that ruling.

The Novelist announced by immersive sim vet

Given that Kent Hudson has designed on games including Thief: Deadly Shadows, BioShock 2, and Deus Ex: Invisible War, it's perhaps little surprise that his first own game is a first-person, stealth-ish, story-exploring sort of thing. However, being indie means that he's free to make The Novelist about a ghost tinkering with the life of a writer who's struggling with his work and family, which sounds delightful.

By today's standards, an MMORPG running for over two years before going free-to-play has been pretty successful with the subscription model. So well done, Rift. Developer Trion Worlds today announced that it will switch the MMO to F2P on June 12, a respectable 25 months after launching. It'll do the usual microtransaction stuff, of course.

Pokemon X and Y trailer rides a Gogoat

Nintendo dropped a Pokébomb this morning, with news including confirmation that Pokémon X and Pokémon Y are set in the new region of Kalos, whose capital Lumiose City boasts an awfully Eiffel-ish tower. The publisher lifted the wraps off another four new Pokémon, with the most exciting being the ridable Gogoat. It's a goat which goes.
