It may have "game" in its name, but retailer GameStop has announced plans to start increasing its focus on "gaming-adjacent" fields while lessening its reliance on video games. CEO Paul Raines dubbed the initiative "GameStop 3.0," saying that it plans on closing about 2 percent of its retail locations, while opening Spring Mobile and Simply Mac stores instead.

Zynga co-founder Mark Pincus steps down as Chief Product Officer

Zynga co-founder Mark Pincus has stepped down from his role as Chief Product Officer, less than a year after he gave his position as CEO to former Xbox chief Don Mattrick. Although Pincus will remain at Zynga as Chairman of the Board of Directors, he will no longer serve int he company's day-to-day operations.

"I would like to thank Mark for his dedicated service to Zynga players, employees and shareholders since the Company's founding in 2007," Mattrick said in a note to investors. "Since that time, Mark has built Zynga into an entertainment leader, turning brands like FarmVille, Words With Friends and Zynga Poker into household names and daily habits for hundreds of millions of consumers."

Naruto: Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution is the umpteenth game in the series, ever since Bandai Namco silently annualized the franchise. With the series now having to rely on telling side stories as it waits for the manga to end, what is developer CyberConnect2 focusing on? According to CEO Hiroshi Matsuyama, the focus is on attracting core fighters.

"Of course we have refined the battle system over the years. But for Revolution, we have totally changed the battle system," Matsuyama said. "In order to create such a new battle system, we asked for support from other development company staff who are fighting game experts, like Street Fighter or King of Fighters."

BioWare has pushed back the rollout of Star Wars: The Old Republic's Galactic Stronghold expansion. Subscriber early access is moving from June 24 to August 19, and the deadline for getting those rewards has been moved from May 11 to July 15. The official launch will be coming in October instead of August.

Higher Metacritic scores impact game sales positively

This is how things should work: higher-rated games will get better sales than lower-rated ones. And while there are plenty of outliers, Ars Technica's Kyle Orland discovered that yes, for the most part, higher-rated games tend to get better sales.

By compiling data released on Steam, Orland discovered that getting a 90+ Metacritic score almost guarantees some success, with games selling at least 50,000 copies when reaching that score.
