This past week, I've been playing the IGF 2012 build of a game that fans of tactical action-based espionage should have every reason to be excited about. The game is called Gunpoint--developed by Tom Francis, John Roberts, and Fabian van Dommelen--and it has players take on the role of an incorrigible, trench-coated spy-for-hire who plies his trade by breaking into office buildings and stealing coveted data for his employers.

Blizzard has grumbled before about Valve Software using the name Dota 2 for its commercial sequel to the hugely popular Warcraft III mod Defense of the Ancients All-Stars--usually called simply 'DotA'--but now it's called in the lawyers. Newly-discovered paperwork, filed with the USPTO in November, show the Warcraft developer has formally opposed Valve's application to trademark "DOTA," claiming it "would cause damage and injury to Blizzard."

In what's one of the more violently-creative promotional tie-ins we've seen in quite a while, developer Eat Sleep Play's co-founder and Twisted Metal creator David Jaffe is promising fans a chance to destroy stuff. Specifically, fans can sign up for a chance to remotely fire M249-SAW machine guns at the real-life version of the ice cream truck driven by Sweet Tooth, the game's fire-haired, clown-faced antagonist.

There's a reason why Demon's Souls was a PS3 exclusive. In Japan, the game was published by Sony. However, in America, the game was published by Atlus--after Sony's US division passed on the opportunity to release the game stateside. In a new interview, Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida admitted that the refusal was "one of Sony's biggest software mistakes this generation."
"We underestimated the quality of the game," Yoshida said.

PS3 players of Skyrim have a lot to look forward to with the recently-released 1.4 patch. The PS3 version of the game has long suffered a debilitating bug that drastically reduces performance over long periods of play. Yesterday's patch directly addresses the issue, and some say the patch is doing its job.
"I believe this patch is working," one Bethesda forum user said. "I was level 32, with an 8MB save, but after patching it dropped to 6.5MB and unbelievably, Whiterun (which was the area with biggest frame drops in my case) is certainly lag free."

On Wednesday we announced 1993's cyberpunk RTS title Syndicate was the next addition our growing list of video game classics, presented by MobyGames.com.
Syndicate garnered a lot of respect among gamers and critics alike when it was released in 1993, thanks to its blend of deep strategic choices and real-time tactical combat. Similar in many ways to X-Com: UFO Defense, players of Syndicate could customize their squads in an RPG-like fashion, using the money they earned on missions to upgrade their agents, tools, and equipment. Syndicate presented players a memorable world: a vision of a dark future, in which all-out corporate warfare was the norm.

Valve is continuing its investigation into last year's Steam hack, and has discovered that a backup file with four years of transactions was probably obtained by the hackers. A letter from Gabe Newell maintains that credit card information and passwords should be secure, but warns users to watch their credit card statements for suspicious activity.

At this point, we've seen more drama surrounding the development of The Last Guardian than we have actual gameplay footage. The next game from Team Ico has been plagued by extensive delays, and was purportedly "canceled" after game designer Fumito Ueda resigned from the company to work as a contractor. With no release date in sight, how is The Last Guardian shaping up?
According to Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida, the game is still "making progress," but adds that it is "slow progress."
