Evening Reading

by Brian Leahy Sep 08, 2010 7:00pm CST
Similar to StarCraft II, I've begun publishing multiplayer guides for Halo: Reach, which comes out next week. Are these things you enjoy reading? It's a bit selective as it requires a good amount of proficiency at a game to be able to write a guide, but it's definitely something the Shacknews team can look into producing for new games moving forward... if we happen to be skilled at them.

What other games would you like to see guides written for? Gaming News o'the Day

  • Big, expensive Kinect bundle announced.
  • Blizzard releases its first official custom map for SCII.
  • Square Enix working on a new Dissidia game.
  • BF:BC2 Vietnam will be showcased at TGS 2010.

A Beginner's Guide to Halo: Reach Multiplayer - Part One

by Brian Leahy Sep 08, 2010 6:00pm CST tags: Halo: Reach, Guide
With Halo: Reach coming up next week, I thought I would write up some mutliplayer tips to help out new or unskilled players. A large part of being good at Halo's multiplayer is going to come down to physical skill--your accuracy and speed with the controller--but there are a lot of little tips to help improve your game.

In this first part, we'll go over the controls, the motion sensor, and weapons. The second part will go into depth about strategies for free-for-all and team-based modes and common mistakes. After I get some extended time in with the full multiplayer game, I'll probably end up writing something up on Reach's armor abilities and maps. For the most part, however, these tips will work for Halo 3 if you want to start practicing today.

Controls and You

While Halo: Reach does not support fully customizable controls, it does have several button layout options to explore. On the surface, they seem to be interchangeable, but some of them have distinct gameplay advantages... Read more

iOS 4.1 Update Hits iTunes, Includes 'Game Center'

by Jeff Mattas Sep 08, 2010 5:20pm CST tags: Game Center, iTunes, iOS 4.1
As teased last week, the first major iPhone software update to Apple's iOS 4 is now available on iTunes.

'Game Center' is one of the many features included in the update, enabling multiplayer gaming, game-based achievements, and leader-boards.

Also chief amongst the updates included in iOS 4.1 are iTunes TV show rentals (for $0.99 a pop), iTunes Ping (a Facebook-like notification feature for iTunes), HDR photography, and HD video upload capability. Check out the image for a list of additional feature updates.

Grabbing the update is easy. Just open iTunes with your iPhone connected and the update should take place automatically.

Microsoft's Kudo Tsunoda Talks Up Kinect's Potential

by Jeff Mattas Sep 08, 2010 4:40pm CST tags: Kinect, Kinect Adventures, Kinect Sports
In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Microsoft's official Kinect advocate, Kudo Tsunoda, shared some more insight about the controller-less peripheral as it gears up for a November release, as well as a glimpse into Kinect's future.

Ever since it was revealed that Kinect's initial software lineup will include seemingly casual-geared titles such as Kinect Sports and Kinect Adventures, hardcore gamers have expressed their skepticism about what value the new peripheral will offer. Sure, there's still a lot of untapped potential, but that just has many core gamers already looking to the horizon for the second wave of Kinect games.

"If you have good gameplay depth, and the more you play the better you are at the game, that's what makes games addictive for core gamers," said Tsunoda, "and I think that's a lot of what we focused on in developing the Kinect launch line-up - making it accessible so you don't have to learn new controls every time you play a new game, but still providing all that gameplay depth and skill that core gamers love." Tsunoda went on to explain that launch titles like Kinect Adventures and Kinect Sports both feature multiplayer, player choice, and player-customization options - all things that many core gamers look for... Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam at TGS 2010

by Brian Leahy Sep 08, 2010 3:10pm CST tags: Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam, Tokyo Game Show 2010
While we all wait on the big Battlefield 3 reveal, it looks like DICE will be bringing Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam to Japan to "showcase" the game for the first time.

Announced at E3 2010, BF: BC2 Vietnam is a digital expansion that includes Vietnam-era weapons and vehicles playable on four new maps. Though pricing has not been announced, the amount of content announced and the "digital" label probably means this is most likely paid DLC.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam is due out this winter and will require a copy of the original game. The debut trailer can be viewed below.

Elemental Multiplayer This Week; Patch Road Map Detailed

by Brian Leahy Sep 08, 2010 1:00pm CST tags: Elemental: War of Magic, Stardock
Though the studio was hit with layoffs last week, development continues for Elemental: War of Magic over at Stardock. This week, the company expects to release version 1.08, which will enable multiplayer in addition to a "weapons balance pass, bug fixes, AI updates" and more.

Additionally, CEO and lead designer Brad Wardell has outlined the plan for future patches and content in a "drama cleansing thread" over on the Elemental forums.

For the immediate future we're going to go down two paths. First, the v1.0x versions will continue to focus largely on compatibility (crashing or weird video issues) as well as bugs and turning on multiplayer.

Then, we will work on v1.1 which will serve as our answer to player feedback. Enhanced AI, improved UI, a tutorial, updated quest system, new magic system, numerous other tweaks. This version will serve as the basis to make a demo version of the game.

Two additional "player feedback" patches--v1.2 and v1.3--will be released in October and November, respectively... Read more
