Wii Impressions: Zelda: TP
In the absence of a full review, David and I have written up our impressions of Nintendo's flagship launch title for Wii, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. As far as I know, neither of us had any problems with the game's signposts, but we did take slightly different approaches with these writeups. If you have a Wii you've almost certainly played this game already, but nonetheless here is my rambling offering (which assumes a basic knowledge of the game's premise) and David's more brass tacks piece. Enjoy.

Twilight Princess' obvious touchstone is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, a game that often inhabits the short list of "Greatest Games of All Time," whatever that means, and by most accounts is one of the two most highly praised Zelda titles along with Link to the Past. Rather that reinvent the successful format that Ocarina of Time imported into 3D, Twilight Princess seeks to one-up Ocarina of Time in as many ways possible in terms of scale and grandeur. The polar opposite of its other internally developed Wii launch title, the ultra-accessible Wii Sports, Twilight Princess is a long, deep, involved gamer's game. Almost as if to weed out those expecting something quick or easy, the substantial introductory segment is uncharacteristically (and perhaps overly) slow, not in line with what is to come later.
But seriously, I somewhat agree with bergman. Zelda has become one of those 'if you've played one, you've played them all' types of games. There's so much nostalgia factor riding with each new Zelda game out that there's an almost unspoken acceptance for the same 'Link-drawn-into-an-adventure-to-save-the-world' storyline that has basically been the same ever since the series first came out and the same gameplay mechanics, enemies, etc.
It's almost as if Nintendo goes down a checklist of all the things that make Zelda what it is, then implements them into the game. With each new Zelda it's like you're essentially playing the exact same game you've played before, only with slightly better graphics.

I like the controls, and they story is good (a pleasant surprise) but that core Zelda gameplay just gets tedious. It seems like I'm frequently wandering around aimlessly, trying to figure out what it was I missed that I needed to do.
If you like Zelda, you're used to that. Me, I find it annoying.
But it's an enjoyable game. I'm about 4.5 hours in, so we'll see if I make it through the whole thing.

Is it really as ghey as it sounds? I plan I picking up a Wii but I know for a fact that will be the one issue that will drive me right up the wall.
I didn't invest in stereo equipment to hear "crap" through a 2 dollar speaker.

How is the loading times? Nintendo is usually very good at removing and/or masking loading times (cue Resident Evil door sequence). Have they managed to do this again?
Not that it really matter, I'm gonna buy this game either way, but I'm curious. :)

I love your Chris. :D I know it's an old joke by now, but small details like this always makes me smile. :)
I agree with Craddock in the sense that the Wiimote feels kind of tacked on to the experience, but you know what? I think it makes a great launch title, Nintendo has always shipped a Mario with their consoles, but this one does the job just fine.
It's one franchise that i'm not sick of, even after 20 years of games. That's gotta say something about the quality of the experience you get. It's a great game, it should be more, I wanted it to be a 10/10, and even though it's not perfect in every sense, I feel that it's completely worth my $50. That's a lot to say about a game in this day & age.
I can't wait to see what they do for another Zelda title, to be honest. Give the Wii time, and you'll see some pretty amazing games for it. I have a feeling that a lot of the titles were rushed just to make the deadline, I can't wait to see what the devs come up with now that they don't have a hardcore time restraint at their necks.
