Shack Interview: Kane & Lynch

Though Denmark based Io Interactive is mostly known for the Hitman series of games, the team also achieved critical success with the tactical action game Freedom Fighters several years ago. Now the company is working on Kane & Lynch: Dead Men, a third person action game that features co-op play. David had the opportunity to ask lead level designer Thor Frølich about the game.
Shack: How do you give orders to your squad? Is it possible to do things such as give orders to one or two specific squad mates?
Thor Frølich The system that is being used is an evolved version of that used in Freedom Fighters. It is in fact simpler but more versatile, offering direct control over individuals or groups. The interface should be simple for everyone to use (if they desire) yet powerful enough to offer the tactical complexity the hardened gamer might require.

Shack: Will squad mates always assist you with your mission, or do they have their own priorities?
Thor Frølich Your crew will always assist you on your mission but they won’t act like complete sheep. They have their own motivations and personal traits which the player will have to understand and accommodate. I promise they won’t be annoying though!

  • I almost blew my living room up when I played the preview video of this on Xbox Live. I wish the people making those videos would learn to normalise the audio volume, FFS! Some of them are incredibly loud compared to other content and some videos on Live are incredibly quiet as well. I guess the loud ones might be stupid sound engineers compressing everything to the maximum loudness (like they do with music and advertising, even when it results in horrible clipping) without realising that Dolby Digital has a crazy dynamic range and that's a really, really, really stupid thing to do.

It did sound pretty cool, though; like a bomb had gone off in my living room as I searched for the remote, hoping my neighbours weren't about to knock on the door asking WTF I was doing. Nice to know my 5.1 setup is able to do that kind of power/volume without distorting.

(I know I could put on the dynamic range limiter on my amp but I figure that might change the way things sound in ways I don't want. This isn't really a case of a video with loud portions; the whole damn thing is *ridiculously* loud.)
