Shack Interview: EVE Online
Earlier in the week, the Malmö Exhibition & Convention Center in Sweden was the setting for the Nordic Game 2006 Conference. Marek Bronstring (we won't stop until we've used every Idle Thumbs writer) was at the event, and got to sit down with CCP's Magnus Bergsson to talk about EVE Online. Though it launched three years ago, it is more popular than ever and Marek and Magnus talked about that increase in popularity, the recent scam, update plans, features that make EVE Online unique and why its not too late for new players to give the game a try.

Shack: Let's talk about what's happening in EVE in the near future, like the Kali expansion pack that's still in the works. What's going to change in those updates?
Magnus Bergsson: There are a few things. The biggest thing inside the game itself is the contract system. It is going to play a huge role, as we have seen by the recent EIB scandal and the other scams that go on. Many of them are created because of people entering quite advanced business transactions within EVE. The virtual economy has grown so big and become so mature that it requires much more complex tools.
We created the most complex and extensive contract system in any MMOG. It is absolutely quite amazing. It will facilitate any type of business you want to do, with complete control over the conditions of the contract. Say you are an alliance leader and I want to command ten people to go out and mine one million trit [tritanium]. I can actually create a contract and say 'okay, I want you to go and you have one week to comply to this contract'. When you accept the contract you might get a ship and the modules to fit on the ship, then you go out to mine a million trit, then to complete the contract you have to return the ship and the modules and one million trit. [...]
That the new "contracts" system is someone with a VERY limited number of public uses per character or even corperatiom, and has high taxes on it for public use. Thus, it's going to force players to use third party in-game-currency auction and sale sites.
A lot of players are annoyed about this.
"Everything is logged. If we really want to get into it, we can find anything."
That's funny, your GM's don't have access to those logs!
Eve's a fun game, but a large part of the playerbase feel it's despite CCP. And if an alternative came along, well....
PS: shack corp is going strong in 0.0 space, sign up people!

Stories like this about EVE always make me want to play the game, and then I read stuff about it in chatty and the fear for my life and free time those cause generally wash away any built up desire I had to try the game.

We love meeting the players. Everybody knows everybody because they are all on the same server. So you actually have some celebrities.

1)The combat is simulated. In the same way WoW is, meaning when you target a ship it you just start auto-attacking and your hit rate is determined by "gear". You even lock on to your targets and rotate around them.
2) You spend a lot of time in interface screens that are some of the most complex menu screens I have ever seen for a game.
