Shack Interview: Red Steel
![]()
Shack: I'd heard that originally, the general setup for Red was supposed to mimic a PC FPS setup, but this scheme was later rejected. Why was that?
Nicolas Eypert: We discovered that you do not manipulate the Wii remote [similar to] a mouse on PC. First of all, your hand shakes and your moves are more extreme. If we had kept the PC FPS setup (Camera and weapon are linked together), you would have a very shaky image on screen. Moreover we wanted to give the player the feeling of having the weapon in his hand. That is why we added other controls for targeting, reloading, zooming...

Are you excited about playing FPS games on the Wii? I don't know that anything will compare to the classic keyb/mouse combo, but I think Wii has the potential to almost match it. At the very least, I think it'll be easier than playing FPS games on a "standard" controller.

I've been able to test the Wii at the GC Leipzig and must say, it is almost impossible to describe in words. The handling of the remote and the nun-chuk are completely natural. Just do as if you naturally think you need to play. The whole experience is completely automatic and sensible.
I trust Ubisoft to make a good "FPS-Starter" game for the Wii. In 1 or 2 years we will sureley see much better games, but hey as said in the interview, there are no standards etc.
Nicolas Eypert: The decision comes from how we understood the console. The Wii is made for fun and for everyone. As it is very accessible, anyone can play: a gamer, a kid, a non gamer, a grand father.... And a large majority of them do not care about gore ... they just want [to have] fun! That is why we removed the gore. It is as if you were directing an Indiana Jones movie: people want to enjoy the action but they do not want to be disgusted by gore. So we [chose to omit] the gore.
is this going to be a problem with the wii? i'm getting it anyway, but are dev's going to shy away from mature themes and graphic violence again like they did on nearly every nintendo console? RE and MK aside, i'd really like games that can cater to more mature players. please dont kill the wii before its out the door by convincing many people that "its just for kids."

I cant decide on this game, every new thing I read about it it makes me more cautious about it.
why dont they just call retro studios and "share information" on the aiming mechanics. Its sounds like retro has nailed it on the new metroid game, but these guys are still beta testing.

Interesting; the game will have no shaders at all? Or is he saying that certain next-gen features relating to shaders will not be used?

Rod: "Daddy, what's the red stuff coming out of kitty's ears?"
Ned: "Uh, that's, that's just, er, raspberry jam."
Todd: "Dad, should I poke Rod with a sharp thing like the mouse did?"
Ned: "No, son. No sirree, bob."
