Shack Interview: Huxley
Coming in 2007 is Huxley, an Unreal Engine 3 powered MMOFPS from Korean developer Webzen. Today we have an interview about the project, with David asking producer KJ Kang about the game's battle grounds, weapons, races, combat and more.

Huxley is divided into two playable races: Sapiens and Alternatives. The Sapiens consist of the factions ONE and SYN while the Alternatives include Alteravers and Alternixes. Players can choose their races and then choose their character’s faction. Huxley is a battle game where all characters begin in almost identical conditions and users develop their characters in accordance to their individuality. Thus, I would like to say that there is no clear concept of different classes (such as warriors and wizards in fantasy role-playing games) in Huxley. There is no division of fixed and clear duties and actions either (such as the number of rifleman or medic of military service in military genres). However, players can choose game playing styles of their preference and weapons to match the style of their choice.
It's probably because in Korea they all have 10ms pings to each other in the country, and they use peer to peer networking for almost every game.
Yea, they use Unreal tech, but they'll probably have their own network architecture. I'm a bit skeptical about this game except as a casual experience, but if they get the netcode down it might be good.

UT 2k7's new game mode will probably do a similar style of gameplay, only better, and without persistence.
We'll see.

1. If the only way to get XP is through "battle", why be a medic or a technician? I see that total objective XP is one type, but there is also "individual record" XP - if that's not affected by non-combat activities, you may have a problem...
2. Cone of Fire?
3. How is Webzen tackling the issue of lag? Some games out there DESIGNED to be played in rounds are having issues handling 64 players on the scene, much less 200.
4. I burned out on Planetside due to the same old same old of capturing the same base and having my accomplishment negated the next day (or hour). In addition, every player looks the same so "personal" accomplishment isn't really a carrot. How does Webzen balance that?
Take care of those, and I'll sign up :D

Pardon? :) Is he saying that its not just a direct port (ie. PC --> X360), but will have different quests/stories (ie. content)?

This game could be great, but I doubt it truely will be. Webzen's never made an FPS before, and Korea isn't known for really being into FPS games. This might be kinda fun for MMO players who sometimes casually play FPS, but for hardcore FPS players I think Enemy Territory: Quake Wars will be the game to play.
