I recently had the chance to check out Human Head's Prey (PC, X360), the resurrected 3D Realms project from Back in the Day. Have a look see, why don't you?

Think back to the the late 90s, in the heyday of the burgeoning first person shooter segment that sprung up in the years following id's seminal Doom. Even if you weren't gaming back then, you've probably heard enough about that golden era to follow along. Duke Nukem 3D is released in 1996, ushering in new levels of interactivity and general unmitigated badassery to the genre. It's not too long before developer 3D Realms starts talking up a new project, an alien-abduction action yarn which will make use of revolutionary new technology and blow away the gaming population.

The game looks great, though. But I think that the developers focus on the gravity thing as the primary asset for differentiating this game versus Q3/Q4 (as well as spirit walking and youdontdiewhenyoudie^TM).

the game looks great, and thanks to remo sounds better than i was led to believe previously. but i'm not sold. require demo or mass quantities of high def videos.

I really love far out environements, and I'm usually dissapointed that even though anyone can make crazy ass environments in a game, they never do. It's all dank sewers and run down buildings or office spaces or just... real stuff.
I want to walk on the moon, look out over the horizon and see not a sun, but the far wall of a huge alien spaceship that's miles away, explore snowswept plains with ringed planets in close orbit above.
Unreal did it. Unreal 2, as poor as some elements of the game were, had some pretty cool levels here and there. Halo did it. It's just a damn shame with the limitless environements we could create, that we're mired in 'real' levels and bombed out Europe of 60 years ago.
So yeah, I'm buying this.

Well that ends any and all fears I had. Nothing to worry about in this game. 100% guaranteed asskick.
The models and environments look totally cliche.
I cant imagine gravity or portals making a game fun, Just like physics didnt make games more fun. When it comes down to it this looks like another run around and kill everything FPS, which i'm long tired of.
I hope the story is good or i cant see myself playing this past the first few levels. Well i did find half-life 2 boring and never could finish that either. Maybe FPS fans just never get tired of the same stuff.
Why cant we see more games like system shock, thief, or deus ex?
I've reached the point where i wont keep buying games for updated graphics and a few gee-whiz gimmicks that ultimately barely effect gameplay.
