Enemy Territory is Free

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is coming pretty soon with a 1 map test release any day now and the full release to follow shortly. There has been a bit of confusion about what you need to play Enemy Territory though so I'll make it as clear as I can. This has been mentioned a couple of times in interviews but confusion still seems to remain, so here you go:

- Enemy Territory is completely standalone no other downloads or purchases are required
- Enemy Territory is completely free, you dont have to pay for anything to play the test or the full release

I have confirmed this directly with Activision so now we can all be certain. The retail release of Enemy Territory was cancelled in February, but it was decided to release the product for free online as a standalone project instead since so much work was already done.

So steve, you didn't happen to ask if this was gonna have some privacy issues like logginf E-mail addresses or anything did you? Activision has always been a top knotch producer, but its a business just the same. Originally I coul dsee releaseing a multiplayer addon for RTCW, increase sales of RTCW, now thats not the case. So what have they got up thier sleeve? I mean unless this gets them some kind of TAX writeoff I am not aware of or something, its a little puzzeling...

So does anyone want to speculate on why it's not only free but standalone?

Is it because Activision is testing the waters?

Is it because Activision thinks it might help sales of RtCW?

Is it because Activision is envious of BF1942?

Is it because Activision wants to create some good will?

Is it because Activision has _______ up their sleeve?

Is it because of some company other than Activision?

This is the nicest thing I've seen Activision do in years, and how odd that they would give away something that looks like this for free, but charge for something that looks like Day of Defeat. This is too odd.

Activision may just be cutting their loses and decided not to publish this expansion due to low projected sales. But since it was almost done, they told the developer to go ahead and finish and release it for free.

That's another line of reasoning. So far, I'm more interested in why this is free. Unless the reason is something boring.

Quite frankly, this rules. What a cool thing to do. Not just for gamers, but for the artists and programmers who worked on it, and would (I'm fairly certain) prefer to see their work be used, instead of burned in front of them.

I wonder what's being done to address cheating. Free means no CD key, which means difficulty in uniqely identifying client machines. Since it's probably built on existing Wolf tech, I imagine porting bots and hacks is going to be a no-brainer. It will be interesting to see how this pans out...
