Saw this on a screensavers rerun last night.
Remember the massive slowdown you saw in Sonic the hedgehog whenever you got hit and lost your rings? Well you can say bye to all that. The CPU of the Genesis can actually run at 7.6mhz or 13.4. What determines the speed it runs at is the game. The CPU defaults to 7.6 mhz, but if it detects a signal from a certain pin on the cartridge slot, it runs at 13.4. So by simply cutting the trace that the CPU gets its clock setting from and soldering from the cartridge slot to the CPU, you can have your Genesis run at 13.4mhz. The amazing part is that this doesn't increase the speed of the game, it just increases how fast the main CPU processes so it eliminates slowdown! Here's a full guide from the guy that discovered the hack
