Evening Reading
So I've decided that with the right environment and audio setup, DOOM3 really is
freaking creepy. I had a hard time picturing myself actually getting jumpy from a
videogame but I was proven mistaken last night. 5.1 headphones are just wonderful paired
up with the game too. Oh, look at this!

Okay, so ID and NVidia were in bed together and Valve and ATI, so the graphics card menz are always gonna bitch about this performance > * and that performance > * ... however, people comparing the two games themselves is just retarded.
C'mon people, they are chalk and cheese as soon as you remove the first person perspective from the issue. Doom III even has third person cutscenes so that's a further difference when it even comes down to the fact that they're both FPSs...
The differences?
Doom ]|[: A horror game, first and foremost, action melded to that almost symbiotically. It's deal is to make you so frightened be it through the use of the environment or hoardes of enemies or psychological mindfucks to get you under the game's control. It wants you to be afraid to continue but too hooked to stop. It wants you to believe that you're actually walking around a real world that is lifted straight from every horror film that involved space, Hell and dirty dank basements and engine rooms. You move from A to B to C and the key of the whole game is survival.
Half-Life 2: An action game, first and foremost, conspiracy theory-style alien invasion game second. It's deal is to stick you in an urban setting so realistic and give you massive freedoms within your environment and interactivity. It wants you to question the reality of your situation and think about the secrets of your government -- at the same time, it's throwing you into an urban warfare situation. Think on your feet, figure out the conspiracy as it unfolds around you - the name of the game, right?
So, does anyone else agree? The games are chalk and cheese.
Sure, talk about the single-player experience... cos so far Doom ]|[ has surpassed any other game for me in terms of being so sucked in and so mentally affected by it ... talk about the ability of the engines but comparing them is going to fall down too... urban realism vs stylised futuristic setting. All of these arguments have strengths and weaknesses but I just don't want to see shacknews become embroiled in an LOTR vs SW style argument and I can already see the makings of it brewing.
And again, come on 3DR, this would be the best gaming year EVAR if DNF was released... Thief III, Doom III, HL2, DNF?? Wow.
