The Problem: Notch is going to force you to update your client and thus make it impossible to log into an unpatched server. You could still play if you were only running the old version of the game client... but you can easily start minecraft without upgrading.
The Solution:
1) Back up the /bin folder. Do it now. Don't wait until after the patch... that's too late. It's in the folder containing your Minecraft data:
-Win7: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft
-Mac: /Users/username/Library/Application Support/minecraft
2) When the patch is released, let your client get updated.
3) Quit the game, then copy the entire contents of your backed up /bin folder into the real folder EXCEPT for one file named 'version'.
That's it. Yes... apparently the patcher ONLY checks to see if the 'version' file is current. It doesn't actually check the game files. gg notch!
Caveat: I know for a fact that this lets you launch an outdated version of the game and play in singleplayer. However, I haven't been able to test if this works to log into a matching-outdated server. It's possible that a server also checks the 'version' file... but I kinda doubt it.
Fingers crossed!
