Intel E8400 Core 2 Duo
Gigabyte p35-ds3l
i've also got 4 gigs of some G.Skill PC2 6400 ram and a corsair 500w power supply. for some reason, i am having stability issues with games lately -namely Assassin's Creed and Mirror's Edge.
awhile back, i cranked my processor to 3.6GHz (9 x 400), and i was using a cpu voltage of something like 1.175V. i was able to run prime95 for 8-10Hrs and it seemed stable. i have played hours of L4D, TF2, and Dead Space with no problems.
fast forward to the steam sale on Assassin's Creed. being the cheap fuck that i am, i decided that $10 was about the price i would pay for such a game, so i downloaded it. upon installing and playing it for awhile, the game would essentially freeze. my computer would not crash, but the game would remain frozen while continuously playing the ambient world sounds. i figured that it was retarded and left it at that.
then comes yesterday. i hopped on that cheap ass Mirror's Edge sale, and it arrived in the mail yesterday. i opted out of viewing watchmen in hopes of doing some cool ninja shit to some techno noise. again, after playing for awhile (the training session), the game froze during the opening credit cinematic (where it displays the title). it was very similar to the assassin's creed error, except the game seemed to progress in tiny spurts every now and then.
so i decided maybe i was pushing my shit too far. i then went into my bios and disabled the temperature throttling of the CPU (where it scales back the voltage and speed at high temp), and tried a number of different vcore settings. still no dice.
i did notice a few things:
- bios reported that my CPU was running at 85c. that's high as fuck isn't it? i thought that shit was supposed to cruise along at 55c, even under load.
- when reading other overclock articles, they reported stock vcore settings of 1.225V. even when setting my vcore to that manually, CPU-Z reports something like 1.6V. wtfmate?
i'm assuming my shit is just plain overheating, and that because the scaling was turned on, it throttled my processor down from a screaming muscle car to a feeble hybrid. that would explain a lot -but i need to be sure.
is my power supply sucking? why can't i get the vcore that i specified to appear in CPU-Z? is it my motherboard being a piece of shit? is my processor just shitty? all of the above?
either way i just ordered a heatsink from newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186134
it's not the best but i don't give a fuck i am this close to just playing these lame games on my PS3.
PLEASE ADVISE COMPUTR HEPL?
