Mostly we've just reorganized the previous guidelines in a way that makes more sense, and we've tried to make the guidelines shorter. There have been a few minor updates in regards to copyrighted materials. The biggest substantive change is that we've dropped the entire "how not to get banned for being an asshat" section. THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE FREE TO BE AN ASSHAT. We have simply decided that the list of rules was long, subjective, and most people did not read over them carefully, so we're just going to stick with a general "don't be a jerk" section instead. Try to be a positive contributor; if you're not, the nuke message will explain the problem. The comments seem to be going fairly well lately, and we're hoping that new users will learn by the good example that all of you set.
We are hoping that the new site will bring in more users who will participate in the comments. For that reason we've added two moderators (obviously we may add more if there is significantly more traffic to the comments). The two new moderators are:
Raoul Duke
Sgtsanity
We welcome them to the moderation staff, and hope that they will quickly become as jaded and hateful as the rest of the moderators. We understand that they may be considered "good people" but we know we can change them. The injections went smoothly and the changes are already starting to become apparent. Soon they will know nothing but hate and will only live to feast on the lamentations of the nuked. Raul Duke has surpassed our expectations and we are considering making alcohol consumption during the process mandatory. SgtSanity is still a little too intellectual and not oppressive enough, but that will change.
For those people who absolutely cannot live without a detailed list of behavioral rules, here you go.
AN INCOMPLETE LIST OF BAD BEHAVIOR:
-Issues and questions relating to the guidelines are best addressed to the moderators in private due to their occasional volatile nature. Therefore, publicly posted questions or complaints on these subjects are discouraged (but not necessarily completely disallowed). This is especially true of complaints, as airing dirty laundry or issues with other users or moderators is one of the least effective ways to get them addressed. As soon as discussion of guidelines gets ugly or otherwise out of hand, it will be nuked. If you want a temporary ban for whatever reason, Shackmessage a moderator rather than posting your request in the comments. Similarly, posts that should be Shackmessaged to Steve or Maarten will be nuked, such as complaints about Fileshack.
-Only one active posting account is allowed per user. The Post Rate Limit (PRL) has been put into place to counteract spammishness, and we encourage a smaller number of higher quality posts. Think carefully before you post. Character/alternative accounts are detrimental to a community of this scale and are not allowed. If someone is banned, then do not relay messages for them. Getting around a ban in any way will result in your ban being lengthened. If it's a month ban, you'll get an extra month. If you have two months already, you'll be permabanned. Don't. Post. While. Banned.
-Don't be an albatross on the neck of the community. Posting fake news or spoilers, spoiling media without notice or the spoiler tag, trolling (including starting X>Y threads), encouraging forum invasions, impersonating others (usually by creating new accounts with misleading names), sharing your bowel movements, correcting spelling/grammar (unless a correction is vital to the meaning of the post), ASCII monstrosities and page widening, posting disgusting/browser hijacking/generally unpleasant links, thread shitting, harassing or insulting people are all examples of jerk things to do. Don't be that guy. If you’re being a jerk, you may get banned.
-Spam in any form will be nuked, be it contextless lyrics, "First post", catch phrases (“post + usernameâ€Â, “Bob Hopeâ€Â, the Russian Reversal, etc.), contextless quotes, freethingy referral requests, unfunny and random chat logs, whatever. Also, posts that spawn a string of spammish responses may be nuked, even if the original poster did not intend it (don't take this personally; it's just the easiest way to clean up the mess). Posters in the subthread may be nuked as well, depending on the circumstances.
-Attention getting behavior for the sake of itself is discouraged. If you want to stand out, contribute to the community. Posting stupid stuff while drunk will result in a 24 hour "drunk tank ban". Sleep it off.
-Posts about committing suicide will be nuked and the poster will receive a one year ban and a (hopefully) helpful link. If you’re suicidal, posting here is like playing with fire.
-Double Posts and wrong replies will be nuked, but you will not receive a ban or a nuke message. We will occasionally nuke posts on particular popular topics and ask the user to repost them in a preexisting thread, in order to prevent redundant monster threads. These nukes are for organizational purposes only; no bans will be handed out with these nukes.
