I just woke up a few minutes ago, as we were playing with Sin: Episodes until we basically collapsed last night. Tom Mustaine was at our house last night with the latest build, and gave us quite a demo.
I have been pretty hyped up about this game for a while. I love the idea of episodic gaming, digital distribution, and of course \m/ SiN \m/. After last night though, I really think this is the most exciting thing happening in gaming.
They built a really solid game, with all sorts of insanely cool interactivity. There are parts of it that make Half-Life 2 look flat and solid. The world just has a very "real" feel to it based on how much you can mess with it. Nothing drags you out of the game world faster than a solid world that you have no effect on. You really feel like you are in a real world in SiN.
What we saw of the AI is pretty damn cool too... (shoot a guy in the knee and he drops to his knees as a result. If he has a buddy nearby, the guy will try and run over and help him back to his feet... etc).
Graphics are hot of course. The particle effects on things like grenades are so awesome, very realistic flames and smoke. So many small touches that really suck you in.
I think the awesome work with the sound effects and music deserve to be mentioned too. The guns sound meaty, the environments have the right sounds, it is very well done. I don't usually notice the sound effects in a conscious way (though a few games like CoD stuck out as having great effects), so it should tell you something that I noticed SiN's sounds right off. Really awesome job there.
And then, of course, there is the stat tracking and auto-difficulty. It adjusts the game according to what you do, and how you play. If you are a crack shot with the headshots, they will probably figure that out and start wearing helmets. Plus, it shows you all those stats so you can see what a total badass you are. :)
Basically, it looks and feels exactly like what it is. It is a bunch of hugely talented gamers building their dream game. They have wanted to make SiN sequels for a long time (and those of you who played SiN know why), and now they get to make that dream come true... and they aren't doing a half-assed job of it.
I am very, very excited for this thing to come out.
