Hands up, who wants more XCOM: Enemy Unknown? You do. It's you. All of you. Delightfully, more is coming "soon" in the 'Slingshot' DLC, announced today by publisher 2K Games. The new Council missions will see your squad "meet an enigmatic Triad operative, divert an alien ship's course, and do battle with the aliens in the skies over China." Ooh, exciting!

Being a AAA game and all, XCOM: Enemy Unknown seems primed for some downloadable content. A few hidden Steam achievements might give a clearer idea of what to expect from them. Be warned, though, these might include a few minor spoilers if you're particularly spoiler-allergic.

If you were one of the unlucky ones that could only get those really cool XCOM: Enemy Unknown movies in 720p instead of 1080p, fear not, human, as a new patch makes 1080p movies the standard for PC. Oh, and nobody should have a bad hair day any more either.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown fostered an incredible amount of goodwill by sheer purity of concept. After classic fans felt put out by a shooter reboot, the announcement of a proper turn-based strategy game sated the community. Firaxis probably could have gotten away with a simple, no-frills update to please a hungry fan-base. Instead, it has lovingly crafted a sequel that feels both perfectly at-home in the modern game era and simultaneously reverent to its roots.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown's release next week marks the return of a franchise in hiding for over a decade. But, how has it changed since its inception? Developer Firaxis Games has released Enemy Unknown's original pitch video--the same video used to get publisher 2K Games on board the series revamp.
Many similarities to the final product can be seen, but there are a few differences. For one, the camera is much closer to the characters, and movement is severely restricted. Additionally, there's a time gauge that lead designer Jake Solomon says ended up making the game "too slow."

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is more homage than imitation. While it bears a striking resemblance to the original 1994 classic, Firaxis has broken down the formula into its component parts and reexamined them piece-by-piece, building a game that retains its identity without feeling dated. At PAX, I got a chance to play the game and chat with lead producer Garth DeAngelis about the design process.

While we were already quite enthused about XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Firaxis Games has announced yet another mode for the turn-based strategy game. For the first time in an XCOM (and X-COM) game, you'll be able to partake in one-on-one deathmatch shenanigans. "Players will be able to pick a squad of soldiers, aliens or even combine a squad of both unit types to create the ultimate mixed squad to command in battle," the announcement details.

Hyperviolence was all the rage at this year's E3. However, only one hyperviolent game could take the crown. The Game Critics Awards have finally been determined, and Naughty Dog has come on top with The Last of Us. Its strong performance pushed PS3 to the top of the heap, with PS3 as the most-winning platform. Sony Computer Entertainment is the most-winning publisher as well, with 7 awards.
