Of the many things I love about Team17's long-running Worms franchise, its goofy and often violent cinematics rank pretty high.

Ground Control to Team17: Online Worms for Wii; Update: 2D Confirmed

Update: THQ has confirmed with Shacknews that Worms: A Space Oddity is built around 2D gameplay (hooray!). Original story: Publisher THQ has announced Worms: A Space Oddity, the approximately four hundredth entry in UK-based Team17's beloved and long-running turn-based ballistic warfare series. Heading to Wii in spring 2008, A Space Oddity will support up to four players online and is being developed by Team17 itself. Oddly, today's press release did not specify whether the game features 2D or 3D gameplay, a distinction that will surely have a large impact on the reception of the announcement among series fans. THQ has been contacted for comment on the matter. It did, however, note that the game is clothed in a new outer space theme and, perhaps taking a cue from platform cousin Super Mario Galaxy, features six distinct worlds with different "global events." As well, A Space Oddity promises Wii-specific control elements, a greater number of customization options than in past games, and single-player missions and mini-games in addition to the expected standard multiplayer. A Space Oddity will follow the also online-enabled Worms: Open Warfare 2, releasing for Nintendo DS and PSP this fall.
