Wargaming CEO 'not happy' with Xbox Live Gold requirement for World of Tanks 360

Wargaming CEO 'not happy' with Xbox Live Gold requirement for World of Tanks 360

World of Tanks is coming to Xbox 360. It may seem like an odd fit, given the platform's general lack of free-to-play games. There's also that Xbox Live Gold requirement for online multiplayer--a barrier to entry to what would otherwise be a free to play game.

Wargaming CEO Victor Kislyi admits that the Gold requirement isn't ideal. "This we have to tolerate, which I am not happy about," he said. "I would rather add another 30-40 million non-golden members."

Why Xbox 360 is the only console for World of Tanks

Why Xbox 360 is the only console for World of Tanks

World of Tanks has been a huge success for Wargaming on the PC, so logically, it's moving to console. But, why make it exclusive to Xbox 360?

"Our style of game was a perfect for the Xbox community," said Jeremy Monroe, general manager at Wargaming. "It is heavily focused on military and action-oriented games. The Xbox Live infrastructure is also the best in the world. It has the experience with social, achievement and communication components, as well as a fine-tuned distribution system."

Wargaming ditching 'pay to win' model

Wargaming ditching 'pay to win' model

Developer Wargaming is scrapping its current "pay to win" system in favor of a new model they are calling "free to win." The new monetization scheme is already started in its popular free-to-play World of Tanks, and is expected to carry through to the upcoming World of Warplanes and World of Warships.

So what had been previously considered premium consumables, such as golden ammo that did more damage or tank repair and personnel medical kits, will now be purchasable for in-game credits earned through experience instead of gold.

World of Tanks prettification update 8.0 live

Fine free-to-play tank 'em up World of Tanks is now substantially prettier, as update 8.0 and its graphical overhaul is now live on both North American and European servers. 8.0 also overhauls the physics system, meaning tanks can no longer casually hang over the edge of a cliff to take a pot-shot. Sorry, Heavy-class tanks.

World of Tanks 8.0 overhauls graphics

World of Tanks 8.0 overhauls graphics

Free-to-play tank 'em up World of Tanks is getting a sizeable overhaul in patch 8.0, with new movement physics and a graphical revamp which runs faster while looking fancier.

The updated engine adds support for deferred shading, fancier water and other gubbins, but the main improvement seems to be that it's simply much faster. Heaps more detail is being added to maps but Wagaming claims they'll still run just as fast as ever, or even faster. Ten maps are being updated at first for version 8.0, with more to come in later patches.
