Ever since Lightbox Interactive was founded by veterans of Warhawk developer Incognito, it's been rumoured that the studio was working on a follow-up to the walking-driving-flying multiplayer PS3 shooter. Today that became official, as Starhawk was unveiled as its "spiritual successor."
Starhawk promises "epic 32 player online battles" on foot, in vehicles, or in air, much like Warhawk. Players will be able to customise the battlefield with a feature called 'Build & Battle,' instantly dropping turrets, bunkers, walls, towers and other structures down from orbit. They're all destructible, of course. Read more »

The first patch for Incognito's PlayStation 3 battlefield shooter Warhawk should be coming by the end of the month, but Warhawk director Dylan Jobe has already revealed the details of the game's next update on the PlayStation Blog. Slated for a December release, version 1.2 will feature significantly updated gameplay features including new maps layouts. "We have found that while a lot of players like playing the really large games, there was a pretty big segment that was playing smaller games," Jobe said in the post. The five new layouts for existing maps will be tailored to matches between four to eight players--Eucadia: High City, Island Outpost: Standoff, The Badlands: South City, Destroyed Capitol: Garden Showdown, and Archipelago: Close Corridors. The update will also bring the Sony-announced DualShock3 rumble support to Warhawk. Interestingly, Warhawk v1.2 will also include a Warhawk Store for purchasing downloadable game-related content within the title's interface, bypassing the PlayStation Store only accessible via the PlayStation 3's XMB system. Previous rumors of a December Warhawk expansion included details of a new vehicle, the dropship, though Jobe did not mention this in his post. The soon-to-be available version 1.1 patch will include mostly fixes and tweaks to gameplay functionality, as well as implementation of match-overseeing Warhawk Arbiters.

Warhawk director Dylan Jobe has offered up the details and expected availability of the first patch for Incognito's multiplayer-oriented PlayStation 3 battlefield.
"The v1.1 patch is in the last stages of testing right now and should be deployed worldwide by the end of October," he wrote on the official PlayStation blog. Changes on the server-side include stat database stability improvement, improved server stability, the raising of the max clan limit to 64 members, and the address of bugs such as the viral rank-up issue and the "time-in-vehicle" stat problem.
On the client side of things, the new patch improves the game's overall connection, fixes stat connection issues, adds support for play-ranked servers, addresses the synchronization flaws dues to packet drop, and resolves several known crash problems.
Along with the new patch, Incognito will also be implementing Warhawk Arbiters to, as Jobe puts it, "protect the Warhawk community and preserve the legitimacy of our worldwide leader boards. These are members of our online services groups in both the US and Europe that will be overseeing the leader boards, community stats and will also be 'in the trenches' joining game servers for first-hand observation.
"Their PSN account names will remain a secret. They have the authority to warn players, call a player out to prove his or her skills, or render judgment," he explained, "think Judge Dread[sic]."
Though Jobe notes that a v1.2 patch is also in development, he did not mention the rumored expansion pack or its dropship vehicle.

Update: Warhawk director Dylan Jobe tells Shacknews that while he is unable to comment on the rumored expansion, Incognito remains committed to supporting the Warhawk community. "We've already made significant updates on the server-side to help issues with stats and connectivity," noted Jobe, "and we will further update the community with additional server-side updates, as well as client-side patches."
Original Story: In addition to confirming Double Fine's oft-rumored Brütal Legend, the latest issue of Game Informer supposedly contains the first details of a forthcoming expansion pack for Incognito's PS3 multiplayer battleground.
Internet rumblings say the expansion is slated for a December release and will include a new vehicle, the dropship, which can airlift vehicles across the map and assault opposing foes with its missile launchers. No pricing information is attached to the bruits, nor is there any indication of new maps or other additions, which could possibly include new weapons and new parts for players to customize their virtual avatars.
When it was first demonstrated, Warhawk was billed as one of the titles that would validate Sony's approach to online content distribution via the PlayStation Store. However, apart from marking the service's only full-priced title and simultaneous online/retail release, Incognito's efforts have yet to produce any game-expanding downloads.
Shacknews has inquired to both Incognito and SCEA regarding the possible expansion, but has yet to receive a response.
