THQ's exclusive license to publish video games based upon Games Workshop's grim tabletop wargame has received a multi-year extension, the two companies announced today.
THQ is the publisher behind Relic Entertainment's lovely 40k RTS series Dawn of War, which has shipped--not sold--6.5 million units to date. The most recent DoW title was Dawn of War II - Retribution - The Last Standalone, a $10 downloadable spin-off of the co-op survival mode from Dawn of War II - Retribution. Read more »

The third full instalment of Relic's Warhammer 40,000 real-time strategy series Dawn of War should apparently be broadly expected 18-24 months after the launch of DoW 2's second standalone expansion Retribution in February 2011. The revelation came from publisher THQ's core games VP Danny Bilson in an interview with Eurogamer.

On paper, this sounds like it could be one of the more boring developer diaries, but in reality it's just the opposite. Gaijin Entertainment went to extreme lengths to capture the sounds of actual airplanes for IL2-Sturmovik: Birds of Prey, the team leaving the safety of their cubicles for a dreary Russian airfield, armed only with a fluffy mic.
Birds of Prey arrives on September 15 in North America on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo DS.

Gaijin Entertainment has detailed the multiplayer modes in its Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 flight simulator IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey, and released an overly-dramatic trailer.
Alongside customary deathmatch, team deathmatch and capture and hold offerings is Strike, where teams try to destroy the enemy's ground troops while defending their own.
IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey is slated for release on September 15, with DS and PSP versions arriving too. A two-mission campaign demo is currently available on Xbox Live.

These new screenshots from 1C's console flight sim IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey illustrate the challenge in recreating a 1940s flight environment.
"Building accurate 1940's environments using the latest in cutting edge satellite technology comes with a set of immediate problems, most obviously the 50 year time gap in buildings, foliage and other features, many of which did not exist at the time of the game's setting and others which are now long gone from the real word and need to be added," writes publisher 505 Games.
