There's no greater feeling of satisfaction than the "Aha!" moment that comes from solving a particularly excruciating puzzle. And that moment often happens after a prolonged bout of pensive thought. The best puzzle games are full of these moments and Vessel is no exception.
Vessel puts players in the role of a brilliant scientist named M. Arkwright. Arkwright's greatest invention is the liquid automatons known as the Fluros. One day, chaos rises in Arkwright's factory as the Fluros start causing trouble. The player is tasked with navigating around Arkwright's world to find the cause of the Fluros' sudden change in behavior.

I've got a soft-spot for puzzle-platformers, especially when they dare to bring new gameplay mechanics to the table. Ever since I first got a glimpse of indie developer Strange Loop Games' upcoming title called Vessel, I've been pretty excited by its Steampunk aesthetics. Underneath that excitement was a cautious optimism about how successful the developer would be in designing puzzles around the game's extremely-cool liquid-physics systems.

This past week, the winners of Microsoft's Dream.Build.Play competition were announced, with the $40,000 grand prize going to a puzzle-platformer called Blocks That Matter by Guillaume Martin. Inspired by Tetris and Minecraft, Blocks That Matter is about a robot called Tetrobot, created by "fictional" inventors "Alexey and Markus"--get it? After the developers are kidnapped, it's up to the intrepid robot to save its masters. Navigating the game's puzzling levels requires the use of Tetrobot's special ability to absorb blocks made of different materials and use them to produce tetragrams.

Indie dev Strange Loop Games is inviting players to play god, or mad scientist at the very least, and turn simple liquids into living machines with Vessel. Publisher indiePub announced today that the physics-based puzzle-platformer will dribble onto PC, Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network this holiday season.
Vessel casts players as inventor Arkwright, whose living liquid creatures 'Fluros' have gone a bit Skynet, and threaten the world and all that jazz. To defeat them, you'll need to solve puzzles by creating more Fluros from fluids including water, lava, glowing goo, and chemicals, each with different properties.
