F1 2010 Dethrones Halo: Reach in UK Charts, Players Complain of Bugs

F1 2010 has performed the impressive feat of bumping Halo: Reach from the top of the UK weekly sales charts after only one week at the top for Bungie's shooter.

Market research firm ChartTrack reports that, after claiming the top spot for the week of its September 14 launch, Reach suffered an 80% drop in sales, allowing the racing sim to beat it to the chequered flag last week. However, it hasn't been a smooth ride. Read more »

Weekend Confirmed Episode 24

Man Down! Brian misses his first episode with a summer cold leaving Jeff and Garnett to do their morning show duo impersonation for this week's show. They don't miss a beat getting right into Whatcha Been Playin? with Shogun 2, Mafia 2, Sonic Riders for kinect, and F1 2010. Last week's topic of shooting as the dominant mechanic in modern videogames struck a chord with the community and gets the Warning off to a flying start. Whether "gamey" elements break serious games and how we feel about game developers becoming movie makers takes the discussion to this week's music break featuring "Over" produced by So Flawless. And yes, Microsoft's decision to raise the price on its Live service gets into the Front Page along with loads of other news like a price drop on Nintendo's handhelds and the end of the ATI era.

F1 2010 Hands-On Preview

Considering it surely paid a premium price for the F1 license, Codemasters has shown some patience with its development team. While they pushed to get a Wii version out for the 2009 season (with accordingly mixed results), they took the year off on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, setting their sights on 2010 for the debut of what they hope will be a successful new run.

Some of the extra time was naturally required to work on getting all the cars and tracks ready for high definition, but using the EGO Engine that powered GRiD as a base put Codemasters well on the way to making a pretty game. A good bit of the extra time has gone toward recreating the F1 racing lifestyle and experience, and developing the unique handling model of an F1 racer. Read more »

OnLive Running Smoothly in Demo at DICE

OnLive, the upcoming cloud-based games-on-demand service that will supposedly allow subscribers to stream and play high-end games on modest PC configurations, was demonstrated at the DICE Summit in Las Vegas today.

According to a report by Dean Takahashi on GamesBeat, OnLive founder Steve Perlman demonstrated the service at DICE with COO Mike McGarvey using a cable modem connection to show how the service handled some unnamed "high-speed shooting games," as well as Unreal Tournament and Burnout Paradise. Takahashi asserts that the demos were glitch-free, and should take the wind out of the sails of skeptics who've claimed that OnLive couldn't possibly work as well as intended. Read more »

A new study published in the journal Cyberpsychology and Behavior found that red teams triumph over blue teams more than half of the time in online multiplayer shooters, reports the Associated Press.

More Tactical Gaming: UT's Infiltration

Related Topics – Unreal Tournament

You may recall an extensive look at tactical gaming from Shacker dslyecxi, who was sure to note at the end of his first work that despite the document's length there were various subjects left unaddressed. One such subject was apparently an Unreal Tournament mod called Infiltration, which he had yet to play. Dslyecxi has now released a followup article dedicated entirely to that mod, going into its substantial weapons selection and customization options and tactical gameplay features.

The surprising thing is the degree to which the animations have been done. Pick up a 1911, for instance, and you'll find a perfect example of the typically exceptional attention to detail displayed throughout the mod. If you empty the magazine and have the slide lock back, upon holstering it you'll see that your character releases the slide before holstering it - just like anyone would do in reality, since you don't holster a slidelocked pistol. It gets better than that, however - draw the pistol once more and the slide will be forward on an empty chamber and empty magazine. Pull the trigger and the hammer will drop on the empty chamber, after which your character's thumb will cock it back again. Reload at this point and your character will drop the empty magazine, insert a new one, and then manually pull the slide to the rear before releasing it to chamber a new round. That Infiltration has dedicated animations for something like this, when almost as a rule all other games miss such details, is once again testament to the incredible attention to detail displayed by the team.
As in the prior tactical gaming effort, the article is illustrated with plenty of screenshots and videos.
