As you can't have a proper samurai showdown without absurd arterial spray and dismemberment, The Creative Assembly has released a new Total War: Shogun 2 downloadable content pack which amps up the bloodletting to the requisite level. If you'd rather be a sneaky ninja, though, the Hattori clan previously exclusive to the Shogun 2 Limited Edition is now sold separately.

What goes up must come down. And now that we've had the Rise of the Samurai expansion for Total War: Shogun 2, it's only natural that we get the newly announced "Fall of the Samurai" expansion as well. It will focus on the clash between the Imperial throne and the last Shogunate in the 19th century, when samurai culture met modern weaponry. As the name implies, it didn't end well.

Sega announced today that Total War: Shogun 2 is getting a new downloadable campaign, titled "Rise of the Samurai." It will include both single and multiplayer modes with a bevvy of new unit types. The samurai will rise in September, but pricing for the expansion wasn't revealed in the announcement.

I'm getting ready to pack up and move my life to Los Angeles from Toronto, but before then I need to get some gaming time in. The last two games I've played at home were for review, so it would be nice to actually spend some of my personal time playing for fun.

Next week will voyage into the near future with Kaos Studios' shooter Homefront, and probe the distant past with The Creative Assembly's strategy game Total War: Shogun 2, while Yakuza 4 will ground us in the present day. In the worlds of wild fantasy, we'll be getting Okamiden, DS sequel to the much-loved Okami, and wacky racing on Wii with Trackmania: Build to Race.

If you've been burned one time too many by past Total War games performing poorly at launch, you'll be glad to hear that a demo for Total War: Shogun 2 will be released via Steam on February 22, letting you try the game yourself before opening your coin purse.
Publisher Sega explains that "The demo will allow all armchair samurai to test their skills in epic land battles and on Total War: Shogun 2's gorgeous new campaign map," carefully avoiding, for whatever reason, revealing exactly what's actually in the demo. Read more »
