Modders, start your engine! Runic yesterday launched the official Torchlight 2 editor 'GUTS', which it says lets people "modify almost everything" in the action-RPG, "from item and skill balance, to level layouts, animations, quests, and much more." Why, we can all learn modding, but if you're not so inclined just lie back and wait for the sweet mods to roll in.

2012 proved that indies could compete with the rest of 'em. Noteworthy indies, such as Mark of the Ninja, Faster than Light, Journey, and The Walking Dead, all made the Shacknews Best of 2012 list. But there are quite a few titles that you may have missed last year.

The game has managed to top a million sales after approximately three months on the market--a feat its predecessor only reached after a year and a half, even with the advantage of appearing on two platforms.

Torchlight 2 is well on its way to becoming a million-seller, according to CEO Max Schaefer, citing the game's "well over a quarter" million pre-orders. Reaching a million sales will make the game instantly profitable, citing a development budget of under $10 million.
Demand for the game, coupled with the rise of digital distribution made it possible for team to price the game at $20--even as it gets favorably compared to the fully-priced Diablo series. That's key to Runic Games' long-term strategy. "In the long run we want to be known as the people who have the best value in gaming," Schaefer said.

Good morning, Shack. We'll kick the morning off right with an "I was wrong." I had speculated in yesterday's column that the new Obsidian game teased on their site was Dungeon Siege 4 based on the icon of a dragon eating its tail surrounding the number four. But it was indeed a countdown timer Obsidian is using to prepare for an announcement sometime on Friday. Speculation now revolves around a new IP, based on some Xs and dots embedded in the source of the page. No more guessing for me, but if I do turn out to be right, I will gloat later.

The original Torchlight came out when Diablo III still seemed woefully far away, and more than filled that gaping action-RPG hole with its charming clicking ways. The sequel was once supposed to launch before but it turns out we're all still just as excited for Torchlight II even though Blizzard beat it to the click-punch. Good news! Developer Runic Games has finally announced that it'll launch for PC and Mac on September 20.
