When partnering up with Santa Monica-based indie dev Giant Sparrow, Sony signed a three-game deal not unlike the one inked with thatgamecompany. The Unfinished Swan, the studio's first game, proved to be an interesting--albeit not quite polished--experience. Today, the studio has announced their next game: the mysterious "Edith Finch."

One wonders why Sony Santa Monica has poured so much into The Unfinished Swan. Like thatgamecompany before it, developer Giant Sparrow has received a three-game contract with Sony, as it gets nurtured by the same publishing agreement that led to creative hits like Flower and Journey. But given its simplistic paint-throwing mechanic, one had to wonder: what makes The Unfinished Swan so special?
The answer to that question is what makes this a particularly difficult review to write. The developer has gone to extensive lengths to hide what happens after the end of the first chapter. Why? Because much of the joy of playing the game comes from experimenting with the game's many surprises.

Sony's investment in thatgamecompany has paid off tremendously. Before the release of flOw, the publisher secured a three game contract with the indie dev, resulting in two more critically and commercially successful projects: Flower and Journey. With thatgamecompany looking beyond just PlayStation for its next project, what is the next studio to receive Sony Santa Monica's nurture and focus?
The answer is Giant Sparrow, whose game The Unfinished Swan was re-announced this morning. The Santa Monica-based studio has also signed a three game contract, in a deal that largely mimics the one created for TGC.

The Unfinished Swan is an odd duck. Last week at a Sony press event, I attended a demo of the game's first level conducted by developer Giant Sparrow. What I saw was very intriguing, but left a number of questions unanswered.
The Unfinished Swan has actually been in development since 2008, then accepted into the 2009 Independent Games Festival. Since then, it has been protected by the gossamer wings of secrecy. The demo marked my first real look at the game, and based on what I saw, I'm cautiously optimistic that it will turn out well.
