Weekend Confirmed 112 - Tera, The Walking Dead, Assassin's Creed 3

Tera has been stealing sleep from Jeff, and is trying to lure Garnett into its clutches as well. They discuss the new MMORPG's action combat that arguably favors a controller over keyboard with "Indie" Jeff and Christian. Like the zombies in the game, The Walking Dead comes back for another week, and not to be outdone, there are more zombie good times with Brainsss. The new Assassin's Creed 3 trailer's in-game action left everyone stoked for the prospects of being in the thick of the American Revolution. And there's time for a few more things before Finishing Moves wraps it all up.

TERA preview

It seems now that every new MMORPG claims to be more action-oriented. Apparently, sometime between the MMO heyday and now, audiences have decided they want more Ninja Gaiden in their loot-gathering, and each new entry in the genre promises to be the one to deliver. TERA is the latest to take on the challenge, billing itself as a "true action" MMO. In a hands-on demo at PAX East 2012, I was surprised to find that boast mostly accurate.

Tera blocking whole continents to fight hacking and farming

Certain corners of the globe are maligned in MMORPGs as havens for hackers, phishers, gold farmers and other unsavoury elements, and En Masse Entertainment not only agrees, it's taking action. The North American publisher of Tera plans to outright block great swathes of the world by IP, not letting them play with more reputable countries.

NCsoft trying to block Tera launch, alleging theft of trade secrets

A May launch was announced for MMORPG Tera earlier this month, but NCsoft is hoping to stop that outright. The publisher alleges that NCsoft employees who went on to found developer Bluehole Studio built the game upon "looted" ideas, and, having fought a similar battle in South Korea, wants to block its release in North America.

Tera to release in 2012, alpha and beta tests teased

Publisher En Masse Entertainment announced today that the action MMO Tera is scheduled for release in spring 2012. Though the game was tentatively slated for the tail end of this year, the push back to next year seems to be to give time for an extra layer of polish.

"Adding time to our schedule will help us ensure we exceed people's expectations for Tera," said publishing VP Chris Lee in a press release. "The game's action combat and depth has generated a lot of interest, and we are committed to making sure every aspect of the game lives up to our standard of quality."

Tera Hands-on Preview

At last year's GDC I got my first look at Tera, an interesting massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) being brought to the west from South Korea. It looked like many similar such high-fantasy themed games, until I was handed an Xbox controller to play it. Unlike the games it resembles, Tera approaches combat differently, with players moving around, attacking, blocking, and dodging like they would in an action game. Back then the controller got that point across, but it was too early to see much beyond hacking and slashing a few monsters.
