Steam voice quality boosted with Skype codec

Steam switched to the SILK audio codec, as used by Skype, in an update launched today. This brings "a significant improvement to Steam's voice chat quality," according to Valve.

While the old codec used a fixed 15kbps of bandwidth, SILK uses a dynamic bitrate which takes up between 8 and 30kbps, "depending on the range of data in the voice signal and current network conditions." Read more »

Team Fortress 2 gets Shogun 2-themed items

Bonus Team Fortress 2 items are a popular promotional tool nowadays, used by games including Poker Night at the Inventory, Rift Monday Night Combat and Killing Floor. Total War: Shogun 2 is the latest to join in on the fun, with an eight-pack of feudal Japan-inspired items for Valve's shooter up for grabs if you pre-order The Creative Assembly's historical strategy game.

The Shogun Pack's eight items, created by community member 'larolaro,' include samurai swords, a top knot and demon mask. You can nab the whole lot by pre-ordering Shogun 2 from Steam, though they'll also be sold in TF2's Mann Co. Store and be available through drops and crafting. Read more »

Steam 'big picture' mode announced

Valve today announced plans to add a new 'big picture' mode to its digital distribution platform Steam, which it says "will offer controller support and navigation designed for television interaction." Good news for those who do their PC gaming from the comfort of a sofa, then.

"Our partners and customers have asked us to make Steam available in more places. With the introduction of Steam on the Mac, and soon in Portal 2 on the PS3, we've done just that," Valve marketing VP Doug Lombardi said in the announcement. "With big picture mode, gaming opportunities for Steam partners and customers become possible via PCs and Macs on any TV or computer display in the house." Read more »

Rift Crosses with Team Fortress 2 for Bonus Items

Team Fortress 2 is crossing streams with yet another game, and this time it's Trion's upcoming MMORPG Rift. Trion announced the bonus items through a press release, while Valve had a more playful approach.

Pre-ordering Rift through Steam by March 1 will unlock two exclusive melee weapons for Team Fortress 2: the Sharpened Volcano Fragment and Sun-on-a-Stick. Both items will be available through crafting after Rift launches. Plus, Team Fortress 2 is getting a new "Riftwalker" achievement, awarded for killing an enemy within five seconds of walking through a teleporter. Unlocking it will grant players a code for the Well Spun Hat in Rift once the game launches. Read more »

Monday Night Combat Packs Bonus TF2 Items on PC

The PC edition of Monday Night Combat packed a few surprises when it launched on Steam yesterday. Everyone who buys Uber Entertainment's DotA-ish class-based shooter before February 1 will receive bonus items for Valve's Team Fortress 2 plus TF2 items to wear in Monday Night Combat. Yes, there are new hats for you to covet.

As the Steam store page details, all TF2 classes get to slip on a Monday Night Combat cap while the TF2 Scout receives the stylish accessories of MNC mascot Bullseye. Each MNC Pro, meanwhile, receives fitting tinkets worn by a TF2 class. Read more »

Killing Floor Holding Christmas Celebration With Evil Santa, TF2 Crossover

Further reinforcing the connection between Santa and Satan, Tripwire Interactive has announced that its co-op horror survival shooter Killing Floor will play host to a whole selection box of ghoulish festivities this winter holiday season.

A new map, Santa's Evil Lair, will overflow with special yuletide versions of Killing Floor's genetic monstrosities, from gingerbread men and elves to Jack Frost and Big S himself. There'll also be also new achievements and an unlockable 'Baddest Santa' player skin. Read more »

Team Fortess 2 Public Beta Program Begins

Much as Valve has previously done with Day of Defeat: Source and Counter-Strike: Source, the developer yesterday launched an opt-in public beta program for Team Fortress 2, letting players test changes which may be rolled out to the regular game.

While the initial release focuses on balance tweaks--affecting Natascha and other slowing weapons--plus a few map changes, Valve notes that the beta program may also be used for "testing new technologies without the risk of breaking the game" and "running higher level, game-wide experiments (like doubling player health)." Tycho Brahe's watch, a new gun for the Heavy and other new Team Fortress 2 items will be unlockable in Poker Night at the Inventory, Telltale and Valve have announced.

In special rounds of Telltale's cross-over poker game, players will use personal items as ante, which you will unlock as TF2 items if you win the hand. Team Fortress 2 Halloween Update Brings New Hats, Maps and Horseless Headless Horsemann

Valve has kicked off Team Fortress 2's Second Annu-Hell Scream Fortress Hauntedead Halloween Special on PC and Mac, a ghoulish festival celebrated with new maps, masks, items, achievements and a rampaging Horseless Headless Horsemann.

At the centre of the festivities is Mann Manor, a macabre 'attack and defend' map that's festooned with exploding pumpkins and home to the Horseless Headless Horsemann. The spectre of Silas Mann, the Horsemann spawns seemingly at random on control points to chase after players with his bloody great chopper. If he's after you, you'll need to melee an enemy player to pass the curse on. Helping defeat the Horsemann, without dying, will earn you a pumpkin head hat, while whacking him in melee will get you Unusual Haunted Metal Scrap for crafting. Read more »

With the launch of Team Fortress 2's Mann-Conomy, which brought paid items to the game, Valve also allowed users to submit and sell their own created items.

Team Fortress 2 Adding Item Purchasing, Trading, Sets, and Customization

Valve has added an in-game store to Team Fortress 2 where players will be able to purchase items, previously available by playing the game, crafting, and trading. The update is not yet live, but here is a rundown of what will be contained in the patch.

The purchases will be made with funds in a player's Steam Wallet--now we know why that was added--and players will be able to add any amount they wish to their bankroll. Funds in the Wallet can be used anywhere in Steam to make regular purchases as well. Read more »

Valve's Newell Calls Xbox 360 Patching Process a "Train Wreck"

In an interview with PC Gamer, Valve's Gabe Newell has called Microsoft's process for patching on the Xbox 360, discussing the disparity between the post-launch of support of Team Fortress 2 on the PC versus the Xbox 360 in The Orange Box.

"We thought that there would be something that would emerge, because we figured it was a sort of untenable," explains Gabe. "'Oh yeah, we understand that these are the rules now, but it's such a train wreck that something will have to change.'" Read more »

Over the weekend, Telltale Games revealed a new, unannounced title in the form of a coded teaser trailer at GameTrailers.
