Most Anticipated 2014: Andrew's Picks

There's a lot to be excited for in the new year, like y'know--VIDEO GAMES. The Shacknews staff pick their most anticipated games of 2014. Finally, here's editor-in-chief Andrew Yoon.

Child of Light

Ubisoft | Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, Xbox One, PS4, PC

Take the beautiful graphics engine of Rayman Legends, combine it with the creative director of Far Cry 3, and mix it with a battle system inspired by Grandia, and you have a game that's clearly designed for me. It's beautiful and enchanting experiment from Ubisoft, whose recent digital efforts have been sublime. As a fan of old-school JRPGs, I can't wait to see how Ubisoft Montreal innovates in that genre.

Super Time Force delayed as Xbox One version announced

Super Time Force delayed as Xbox One version announced

Super T.I.M.E. Force may have players messing about with time to explode men, but its development sadly must obey the known laws of the universe. Developer Capy Games has delayed the co-op singleplayer shooty platformer's Xbox 360 release into early 2014 so it can launch alongside, hey, an Xbox One version!

Super TIME Force trailer attempts to explain single-player co-op

Super TIME Force trailer attempts to explain single-player co-op

Capybara's upcoming Super T.I.M.E. Force for Xbox 360 is a mind-bending platformer that has you controlling multiple characters simultaneously by manipulating time. It's rather difficult to understand without actually playing the game. A new trailer attempts to distill the game to us mere mortals, but distracts us with humor, dinosaurs, and a bus that travels through space. In other words, it's pretty awesome.

Super Time Force trailer: six minutes of gameplay

Super Time Force trailer: six minutes of gameplay

Super T.I.M.E. Force's retro cartoon trailer was thoroughly pleasant, but how about a little gameplay? A new six-minute gameplay vid shows how the heroes reverse and loop time to explode enemies and rescue each other from imminent death.

Super T.I.M.E. Force trailer will blow you away

Super T.I.M.E. Force trailer will blow you away

Given how popular retro-style games are nowadays, it's downright disgusting that it's taken so long for developers to make a trailer as amazing as the new Super T.I.M.E. Force one. It's just like the cartoons from your childhood, if the cartoons from your childhood weren't crammed full of tedious nonsense you've forgotten as you race towards your grave.

Super T.I.M.E. Force preview

Super T.I.M.E. Force preview

Super T.I.M.E. Force from Capybara Games would be easy to overlook. In both visual style and a glance at the action, it seems by all appearances to be a simple throwback to classic shooters like Contra. Its one defining factor, the time-looping mechanic, turns that on its head and made it one of the most unique and clever games on display at PAX East this year.

Fez wins IGF 2012 Grand Prize

The movers and shakers of the indie scene came together at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco last night for the 2012 Independent Games Festival awards ceremony, where prizes aplenty were handed out to this year's winners and future stars.

Polytron's eternally in-development puzzle-platformer Fez lifted the Grand Prize and $30,000, four years after it won an IGF award for Excellence In Visual Art. Other notable winners include Dear Esther, Frozen Synapse, and Spelunky.

Super T.I.M.E. Force coming to Xbox Live Arcade

Super T.I.M.E. Force coming to Xbox Live Arcade

A few months ago, Capybara Games revealed a new game: Super T.I.M.E. Force. The curious sprite-based 2D game had a lot of promise--and it seems Microsoft took notice.

During the IGF Awards, Microsoft presented the "XBLA Award" to Capybara. The prize will give them a publishing contract with Microsoft to bring their title in front of the XBLA masses. Additionally, Microsoft promises to offer "full game funding to complete the title."
