Starhawk developer LightBox Interactive has laid off 24 people as it prepares to move away from shiny big console games with a smaller, self-funded game for iOS. The PlayStation 3-exclusive spiritual successor to Warhawk received a lukewarm critical and commercial reception, and Sony has said it's no longer working with the Austin studio.

Jumping into a competitive online game can be intimidating, especially if other players have years of experience. Interestingly, Lightbox Interactive may have figured out a way to lure more people into the online world of Starhawk, including newbies.
Starting September 25th, three versions of Starhawk will be available to download on the PlayStation Store. The full game (which includes all post-release updates) will be available for $39.99. However, you can also get the single-player and multiplayer modes separately.

Online games are notorious for having an abundance of DLC. It's becoming increasingly common for publishers to offer DLC "season passes" at launch, granting continuous access to a game's add-on goods. But Starhawk will not follow the rest of the industry. Instead, LightBox Interactive has promised that all future map packs for the game will be free. Curious, no?

Warhawk managed to garner a dedicated fan base with its unique blend of on-foot, vehicular, and air combat. Five years later, LightBox Interactive has prepared a spiritual successor with Starhawk. Retaining many of the gameplay elements of Warhawk, LightBox expanded upon the formula, adding not only space combat, but a RTS-inspired "Build and Battle" mechanic that allows players to dynamically drop gameplay-changing cargo from the sky.
It's clear that Starhawk will live and die by its multiplayer. However, unlike its predecessor, Starhawk also offers a single-player campaign--one that players will not want to miss.

As an online game, Starhawk is undoubtedly going to pack a ton of DLC. You can get a head start on your digital collection by checking out the latest trailer for the game. By doing so, you'll unlock the "Rift Hunter" skin.
The "Build Your Team" trailer is exclusive to Facebook--and for good reason, too. The trailer will be customized based on info derived from your friends list. Of course, that means you'll have to grant the "app" access to your personal information. But isn't that a small price to pay for free DLC?

While the internet has made it much easier to play against others, it's meant the slow death of one of our favorite N64-era features: split-screen multiplayer. Thankfully, the folks at LightBox Interact understand that it's fun to play side-by-side with a friend and go online at the same time.
Starhawk will feature two-player split-screen, the developer has just announced.

Paid downloadable content has produced some delicious fruit (video game stuff) that might not have otherwise received the water (money) it needed to grow (be made), but it's always nice to simply pluck a blackberry from a bush as you stroll down a country lane and pop it in your mouth (get free stuff too). Huzzah, then, that Starhawk developer Lightbox has said that its spirital successor to Warhawk will see "a bunch" of free DLC as well as paid add-ons.
