The official Star Wars: The Old Republic community forums have been abuzz with complaints from players who've been wondering why most high-resolution textures in BioWare's MMO have gone missing after the game launched. After some promised investigation, word has finally come out as to why said textures have vanished, and while it makes sense, it's probably not the answer that player were hoping for.

Bioware announced the first substantial content update for Star Wars: the Old Republic, and it's coming in hot. "Rise of the Rakghouls," as it's been named, arrives next Tuesday, January 17. Along with the typical MMO patch fare of balancing tweaks and bug fixes, the update brings with it some sure to be welcome higher level group combat content. This addresses one of the chief complaints of the game's most dedicated players, many of whom have reached the level cap with one or more characters and are hungry for more to do now that they're there.
[UPDATE: BioWare sent over a trailer with a scene of the first contact with the Rakghouls. Check it out after the jump.]

I've still got seemingly countless hours to go before I save the galaxy in the name of the Republic. Now that my Jedi Shadow Bukowski has reached level twenty-three in Star Wars: The Old Republic, I've been able to spend some time delving into things like crafting, assigning points to my skills, and have even participated in some epic-looking space combat in my new personal starship. With a few caveats, these additional systems and gameplay mechanics have continued to add welcome layers to the MMO that is engaging me in a way that few others have before.

Between a Galactic civil war and various undesirables, the galaxy of Star Wars: The Old Republic is a dangerous place. Fortunately for you, one little trick can both save your skin and make you more powerful than your enemies could possibly imagine. That trick is dance, dance, dance.

You need thousands of midichlorians within your cells to control the Force, Star Wars fans horrified by George Lucas pretend not to know, and you need Windows in your PC to play Star Wars: The Old Republic. However, developer BioWare has now said that a Mac client for the recently-launched MMORPG is "definitely" something it's "looking at next," and hinted at other platforms.
"We know there's a big Mac audience of BioWare fans ... we know that's an important and large audience. And we want to serve that audience," CEO Ray Muzyka said.

Star Wars: The Old Republic has gotten its first patch, meant to address "high-priority bugs." At the top of the list, players shouldn't see performance issues on Taris, and pending mission rewards should be delivered correctly.
"We're committed to providing the best possible MMO experience," the update says, "and will continue releasing fixes and updates on a regular basis."

Star Wars: The Old Republic has continued its surge of new players after the game's late December release, EA has announced. Since the December 20 launch, players have logged more than 60 million in-game hours. 5.5 million of those are from the holiday weekend alone, because who wants to spend time with family when you could be using the Force?

Perhaps you've heard of a little MMO called Star Wars: The Old Republic that recently launched. Electronic Arts, BioWare, and LucasArts have released some impressive player-driven statistics for the game, which speak directly to just how quickly folks are taking to the game, and how much they're enjoying the historical sci-fi epic.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is already inching towards maximum capacity on some servers. This has prompted BioWare to warn users to create characters on different servers, unless they don't mind waiting in a long queue line to play.
"We want incoming players to populate lower population servers," community manager Stephen Reid pleaded.

Star Wars: The Old Republic launches today, complete with a traditional subscription model. Meanwhile, more and more often we're seeing MMOs either launching or switching to a free-to-play model. While TOR creative director James Ohlen doesn't discount that possibility eventually, he says "right now" the company is committed to the subscription.
"I don't know what's going to happen in the future," Ohlen said, "but right now, we're very much focused on making it a subscription game."

Star Wars: The Old Republic finally opens its virtual doors to everyone this week. I've already made my way through the first ten levels of gameplay as a Jedi Consular, though, for some early impressions. Given the pedigree of the developer, muscle of the publisher, and a stupendous IP, The Old Republic might be the first MMO that stands a chance of being truly competitive with World of Warcraft. It's far too early to give anything resembling a final verdict on such a massive game, but my initial experiences with it yielded some positive surprises.
