We're debuting our new video news show today, Shacknews Daily. As the name implies, we're shooting to put it out every day of the week. As we ramp up to that pace, we wanted to show you what we've got working so far and start getting your feedback. Star Wars: The Old Republic free weekend begins March 15

BioWare and EA's latest MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic, has over 1.7 million active subscribers. But a new promotional offer may bring that number even higher.

This Thursday, The Old Republic will have its very first "Weekend Pass Free Trial." This promotion will give newcomers to the game a chance to play for up to four days for free, with no payment method required.

The Old Republic 1.2 'Legacy' update arrives in April

The second major content update for MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic is slated to go live next month. The pending 1.2 update called 'Legacy' will include new high-level content for groups, the new 'Legacy System,' and more robust UI customization options, in addition to the requisite gameplay fixes and combat optimization tweaks.

The Old Republic has 1.7 million active subscribers

Star Wars: The Old Republic was quite an expensive endeavor for Electronic Arts, with one report pegging development costs of over $200 million (and counting). EA must be relieved to announce that The Old Republic has sold through more than 2 million units, and has retained 1.7 million active subscribers. That's a lot more than the "1 million customers" needed to make the game profitable.

BioWare says subscription MMO audience 'limited'

Star Wars: The Old Republic is a commercial hit, but it also has plenty of investment to make up for. The game uses a standard subscription model, and doesn't seem to be planning to change that anytime soon. Game director James Ohlen admits that the audience for subscription MMOs is "limited," and most players only take on one at a time. Still, he suggests that more than one MMO can find success.

In case you didn't know, MMO's are expensive to make. When it comes to BioWare's recently-released Star Wars: The Old Republic, "expensive" equates to roughly $200 million. That doesn't even include the projected "tens of millions" of additional funds that will be expended on a yearly basis to keep a certain galaxy far, far away fresh with new content.

BioWare patches SWTOR 1.1 exploit, warns users

As with any online game, BioWare has an ongoing battle to plug newfound exploits in Star Wars: The Old Republic. The latest, found since patch 1.1, let users spawn-camp around turrets in PvP servers. The problem was exacerbated by faction imbalance, giving an advantage to the Imperials for their greater numbers.

BioWare has issued another patch, and has stepped in to dispel some rumors and talk about the exploit, as well as issue a stern warning for those trying to take advantage of the glitch.

SWTOR 1.1 update adds severe Valor exploit; BioWare investigating

The 1.1 update for Star Wars: The Old Republic launched today, bringing with it the "Rise of the Rakghouls," along with some unintended exploits that understandably have the game's community up in arms. The biggest problem seems to center around turret-farming in the high-level areas of Illum, which encourages large groups to camp the spawn-points of giant turrets. The problem seems to be exacerbated by the factional imbalances, wherein Imperial players still significantly outnumber those on the Republic side.

Star Wars: The Old Republic Rise of the Rakghouls update arrives

After a brief one-day delay, the 'Rise of the Rakghouls' update for Star Wars: the Old Republic went live this morning. This first meaty update for the MMORPG, brings with it the new content for higher level groups as we detailed when it was initially revealed.

"This first Game Update will show everyone how serious we are about expanding Star Wars: the Old Republic, and there's much more to come," wrote game director James Ohlen.

Star Wars: The Old Republic update 1.1 delayed

Today was supposed to see the launch of the first big Star Wars: The Old Republic content update, but Jedi and Sith looking to explore the new Flashpoint and Operation will need to wait a while longer. Update 1.1, titled Rise of the Rakghouls, has been delayed indefinitely after players on the public test server discovered "issues requiring additional testing."

BioWare talks future Old Republic update plans

The Rakghouls are just starting to rise in Star Wars: The Old Republic, but BioWare has plenty of other pots on the stove for future content. In a new interview, game director James Ohlen discusses the team's plans moving into the next update and beyond through 2013.

The first major update focused on performance, while updates to game systems are being mostly saved for the the second update in March. The team is also working on a a second part of the Rise of the Rakghouls storyline, and a new planet called Denova, which will include a new Operation, a new Warzone, and possibly a new space mission.
