Licensed games tend to fall into one of two categories. Most tend to be rubbish, sent through a rushed development schedule to capitalize on a marketing tie-in. But a few manage to become real gems, pushing a genre forward, and expanding its reach beyond its fans.

For any fan of the old Star Trek series, one of the better episodes was Arena, where Captain James T. Kirk fought against a lizrad-like Gorn. Namco Bandai has gotten William Shatner and the Gorn to reprise their roles in a new TV commercial for the upcoming Star Trek video game. Well, sort of.

Star Trek, the series that taught a generation that hacking is an acceptable way to pass a test if you do it with enough cocksure bravado, is getting another (rebooted) installment this summer. A video game, simply titled Star Trek, will feature the younger, hipper Kirk and Spock. Today Paramount announced that pre-orders will get the "Elite Officer" pack, full of goodies to play dress-up with your virtual Vulcan.

Hot on the tail of last week's announcement, the first trailer for boldly-going co-op shooter Star Trek has beamed down from E3. Plus, PlayStation 3-exclusive perks have been announced.
"Most teaser trailers feature zero gameplay, but we're proud to introduce Star Trek to the world with a first look made up entirely of pre-Alpha gameplay to show how great the game looks even though it is more than a year off," said Paramount Digital Entertainment president Tom Lesinski. Star Trek video games are boldly going where they've never gone before with a new co-op shooter starring Kirk and Spock, publisher Paramount Digital Entertainment announced today. The imaginatively-named Star Trek follows on from the recent semi-reboot movie.
The dynamic duo will be teaming up to "stop a legendary enemy race bent on conquering the galaxy," Paramount says. The game's script is penned by God of War series writer Marianne Krawcyzk "in collaboration with" the movie's writers Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman. Read more »
