Recent Double Fine Productions fruits including Costume Quest and Iron Brigade were borne of the studio's 'Amnesia Fortnights,' where everyone sets aside their regular work to prototype wacky new ideas. Now Double Fine is opening that process up to the public, letting us slap down some money to choose which game ideas get made and receive those prototypes. If you've ever fancied a smell-based stealth game or Godzilla-inspired roguelike, you can now make that happen.

Next week's round of new video game releases is light on retail offerings but thankfully digital distribution picks up the slack. PC rules the roost, with goodies including reverse-tower defense Anomaly: Warzone Earth and Battlefield Play4Free, the free-to-play version of Battlefield 2.
However, surely the most thrilling new release is multiplayer Nazi dinosaur-o-rama Dino D-Day. Read more »

Stacking's tramp-based first downloadable content The Lost Hobo King is headed to Xbox 360 next week, Microsoft mouthpiece Larry 'Major Nelson' Hryb has revealed.
The Lost Hobo King will be released on April 6 at the price of 400 Microsoft Points ($5), on Xbox 360 at least. The PlayStation 3 price and date have yet to be revealed, though Stacking's Facebook page noted today that they would be revealed "later this week," so we should know for certain soon. It'd be shocking if The Lost Hobo King cost any more on PS3 and arrived much later. Read more »

Not to keep endlessly jabbering about Stacking, but it's really impressed me in a lot of ways -- most of which weren't immediately obvious to me from the get-go. Having played through the main storyline once, I'm going back to find alternate puzzle solutions and collectibles -- and having a blast doing it.
It's probably one of the best new attempts to revitalize the spirit of old-school adventure games, and does so by taking traditional conventions and streamlining them for the better. Early adventure gaming often times forced the player to resort to picking up everything that wasn't nailed down (regardless of its apparent usefulness), and combine those items with each other in a way that was increasingly random, depending on how "stuck" you were on a puzzle. Double Fine's new downloadable adventure, Stacking, has finally hopped its cute little self onto both Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network. Set in a world populated exclusively by Russian "matryoshka" nesting dolls. Stacking places players in the role of Charlie Blackmore, a particularly tiny doll with the ability to stack himself inside larger dolls. The story begins when Charlie's family is forced into indentured servitude by a malicious character called The Baron, in order to pay off family debts. Charlie escapes, and embarks on a quest to save his family from The Baron's clutches.
As the screenshots and trailers show, Stacking's visual sensibilities effectively combine the traditional art-style of matryoshka with a Great Depression-era aesthetic. The game's period-appropriate soundtrack is filled with piano and violins, which compliment the game's feel quite well, and play nicely into its use of silent film-era dialogue cards that convey the exposition. Dolls of various sizes hop along at a good clip, each moving in a way that speaks to character-type. Normally, I'm hesitant to use words like "charming" to describe games, but Stacking's presentation is the very definition. Read more »
