Valve Reveals Lifetime Retail Sales of Half-Life, Counter-Strike Series

Beloved developer Valve has released lifetime retail sales figures for some of its more popular games, including the Half-Life and Counter-Strike series, revealing that the studio has sold over 32.8 million games since the 1998 release of the first Half-Life.

Sales from Valve's digital distribution client are not factored in, with the figures only accounting for worldwide retail sales. With Half-Life 2, Valve began simultaneously releasing all of its PC games at retail and via Steam. The numbers were originally printed in the November issue of Game Informer, then republished by Gamasutra. Read more »

Sega's Werehog-filled platformer, Sonic Unleashed (360, PS3, PS2, Wii), has been pushed out of 2008 in its home territory of Japan, leaving its North American release date of "holiday 2008" in question.

Sega's Japanese site for Sonic Unleashed--known as Sonic World Adventure on the other side of the ocean--has the news of a delay from the game's intended December 18 Japanese release all the way to a nebulous "spring 2009." Read more »

Sonic Unleashed Trailers Get a Little Holy

Sega has let the lid off two new trailers from its latest Sonic effort, Sonic Unleashed. As is requisite in a Sonic Unleashed trailer, there is plenty of funky music and Werehog action to be had, but the important thing here is that Sonic is running on water.

Sonic Unleashed speeds onto Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and Wii later this year.

Those Sonic Unleashed trailers are at it again with the funky music. This time, a rather pretty trailer sprints and slides through the desert air before giving an extended preview of the Werehog, the night-time, Stretch Armstrong-esque incarnation of everyone's favorite blue hedgehog.

In the works for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and Wii, the 2.5-dimensional Sonic sequel will arrive later this year. Read more »

Demigod Hands-on Preview and Fresh Screenshots

To describe Gas Powered Games' Demigod as a DotA clone is doing a disservice to its target audience. Demigod is DotA for people who think DotA sounds like a division of Homeland Security.

So what is Demigod? Picture a PC RTS where the player controls a single, gigantic hero unit--an RTS/action-RPG hybrid. Each side has an automatically-spawning horde of minor units, with the Demigod's task being to either direct them to a specific location, or impact the battle to the point that your side eventually overtakes the opposing enemy. 'PC Gaming is Rediscovering Itself,' Says Supreme Commander Creator Chris Taylor

Related Topics – Demigod, Sonic Unleashed, PC Gaming, PC

Chris Taylor, designer of classic PC real-time strategy game Total Annihilation and president of Gas Powered Games, thinks that the PC isn't dead, but rather is repositioning itself as a different kind of gaming platform.

"We've pushed the limits of high system requirements, and I think the rate at which people are buying crazy new hardware has slowed," he commented to Gamasutra. "I think we've come out of that turbulent ten years," referring to the ten years since the advent of graphics acceleration hardware in games and its rapid progress since. Read more »

Sega: Sonic Criticism 'Probably Warranted'

Sega of America VP of marketing Sean Ratcliffe acknowledged that criticism directed towards recent Sonic the Hedgehog titles is not without merit, following the lukewarm reception of recent Sonic Team efforts.

"Some of that criticism is probably warranted," Ratcliffe admitted to GameDaily. "We definitely recognize that a franchise that has been going as long as Sonic, you really have to put a huge amount of effort in to make sure that you maintain that quality, and arguably a disproportionate amount of effort."
