Sonic CD, Sonic 4: Episode 1 available on Steam today

PC users are getting a triple-dose of Sonic today, as Sega is bringing two games and a piece of DLC to the platform all at once. It might seem like these are just suddenly popping up on you out of no where, but it's Sonic, and that's kind of what he does.

Both Sonic CD and Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 are available for the first time on Steam. The service is also hosting a Sonic sale so you can speed it up on the cheap. Plus, you can grab the Casino Night Pinball Stage for Sonic Generations.

See how Sonic the Hedgehog was born

As part of Sega's ongoing celebration of the 20th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, the company is making a documentary chronicling the history of Sonic. The first part, released today, shows how the the hedgehog was created. The video includes footage of various Sega alumuni, including Peter Moore and Yuji Naka.

So what was the original inspiration for Sonic's gameplay? And why did the company rally behind the mascot? You'll have to watch to see for yourself.

Sega wants a 'new standard Sonic' for 2012 and beyond

Sega released Sonic Generations this week to celebrate the 20th anniversary, but the company recently said it has no plans to use Classic Sonic again despite the game garnering record pre-orders. So what does Sega plan to do with Sonic in the future?

"I would like to make a new standard Sonic, a modern Sonic if you will, in 2012 and beyond," said producer Takashi Iizuka.

Classic Sonic has no post-Generations plans

Sonic Generations releases in the U.S. tomorrow and Europe on November 4, bringing both 2D and 3D perspectives to a number of both new and classic levels for the series' speedy blue hedgehog namesake. Generations celebrates twenty years of Sonic--an anniversary that's sure to make some of use feel really old--but it's a little surprising find out that Sega doesn't appear to have any more plans for Classic Sonic in the near future.

Sonic Generations is most pre-ordered Sonic game

Sega is celebrating Sonic's long and storied history with Sonic Generations, bringing together both the classic chubby Sonic and the new slimmer, sleeker, inexplicably more talkative Sonic. And apparently, this trek down Nostalgia Lane is giving Sonic a boost, as Sega announced today that it's the most pre-ordered Sonic game in the hedgehog's 20-year history.

Sonic Generations 3DS SpotPass features detailed

Sonic Generations is getting a 3DS version alongside its console counterparts, and today Sega has detailed how that version will use the system's SpotPass features. You can exchange profile cards and exchange missions, but missions can also be unlocked using Game Coins.

Report: Original Sonic unlockable in Generations

Sonic Generations is laying the nostalgia on pretty thick. Between old-school chubby Sonic and clear reference Green Hill Zone, Sega is making sure this hits the part of your brain that pines for the 16-bit era. And since the game is already steeped in retro-goodness anyway, they must have figured "what the heck?" and thrown in the original Sonic the Hedgehog for fun.

Sonic Generations 3DS available on November 22

Sonic won't be quite the "fastest thing alive" for Sonic Generations on 3DS. While the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 versions are all launching on November 1st, the 3DS version will be three weeks tardy. Sega has announced that the 3DS version will be available on November 22nd.

Sonic Generations demo #2 reintroduces Classic and Modern Sonic

Finally! It's time to get exactly what you've been asking for. A second demo for Sonic Generations is coming very soon, and this time, you'll be able to play as the taller, cooler, lock-on-ier Modern Sonic.

Unlike the time-limited first demo, the second demo will allow you to race through Green Hill Zone as both Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic.

Sonic Generations trailer races through the Dreamcast era

City Escape, Seaside Hill, and Speed Highway are the three re-imagined zones shown off in all their updated glory in the new Sonic Generations 'Dreamcast' trailer. Folks will be able to zip through all of these levels from either the "modern" 3D perspective or the "classic" 2D perspective from older Sonic titles.

Sonic 4: Episode 2 coming in 2012

The second episode of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is still a long way off, as Sonic Team's Takashi Iikuza has said he is hoping to release it in 2012. The development is stalled as the team focuses on getting Sonic Generations out this year, but Iikuza claims that was always the plan.
