Sports: NBA 2K11

Yearly sports game franchises often get accused of being little more than roster updates coupled with some subtle are often so inconsequential, all but the most rabid fans would be hard-pressed to notice. In 2010, NBA 2K11 managed to handily buck this trend, giving gamers a great reason to keep this year's entry in their gaming libraries long after the 2011 season is over. That reason is Michael Jordon. His host of "Jordan Challenges" allow players to replay some of MJ's most legendary performances, or even rebuild his career from scratch. Read more »

Skate 3 Review

The third entry in the main Skate series from Electronic Arts Black Box goes to great lengths to be more accessible to new players and casual fans, while simultaneously appealing to the hardcore audience with several key features. Multiplayer is the focus of this evolutionary step in the franchise along with the ability to design full skate parks and share them with the world.

Newcomers will find an expanded tutorial mode in skate.School narrated by Coach Frank (Jason Lee) along with a forgiving "easy" difficulty setting. On the other side of the coin, Black Box has also added a "hardcore" difficulty setting, which cranks up the physics for an added challenge. It is, however, sadly broken for some grinds making them more difficult than intended, but a downloadable patch fixing this issue should be on the way. Read more »

Skate 3 Multiplayer Impressions

Yesterday, I took a day trip up to EA Redwood Shores to drop-in on some Skate 3 multiplayer sessions with producer Chris "Cuz" Parry and some other journalists. Skate 3 supports up to 6 players online in both competitive and cooperative events.

We started off with a few cooperative challenges, which shared across offline and online modes. Additionally, everyone in the game will progress his or her own career, which is ubiquitous in Skate 3. While waiting for the challenges to be proposed, everyone is free to skate around the current zone. During freeskate, collisions are on, but during challenges and events, players will not bump into each other so people play honorably. Read more »
