How Will Wright plays the new SimCity

How Will Wright plays the new SimCity

You may have thoughts about the new SimCity--the city size; a lack of terraforming; its always-online DRM requirement--but your opinions don't matter. No, Will Wright, that's who we want to hear from. Metaphorically sitting in a big red leather armchair to tell a story like a beloved uncle, the SimCity creator talks about the first game in the series he hasn't worked on, his first impressions, and how he builds his cities.

Three tips for building a successful SimCity

Three tips for building a successful SimCity

It's been a decade now since the last real SimCity. Think about it: George W. Bush was still president. Pluto was still a planet. Unless you really love the series (and many do), it's probably been a long time since you sat down and had an honest go at building New Gotham City or New New York.

That was the certainly the case for us when we sat down to play EA's SimCity reboot for the first time earlier this month. But after several hours, and several abject failures, we were able to figure things out and get a real metropolis going. Here's what you should be thinking about when you jump into SimCity yourself in a couple months.

SimCity preview: preparing for the future

SimCity preview: preparing for the future

SimCity creative director Ocean Quigley is not the type to obsess over building a perfect replica of New York City. He is not obsessed with building the perfect seaport or an accurate toll road. Having been the art director for the series going back to at least SimCity 4, his background is in art, which may explain why he tends to paint his worlds in broad and colorful strokes.

"I don't have a top-level philosophy on how things should go or how things need to go. I'm more of a tinkerer and an experimenter with it," he muses, "so it's more important to me to get a somewhat plausible representation of the systems that make up a city than to have a particular agenda about what cities should be like or need to be like."

Why you'll 'never lose' in SimCity

Why you'll 'never lose' in SimCity

Maxis has already detailed the unspeakable fates that can befall citizens of your SimCity, but those disasters are setbacks. You won't actually lose the game, and in fact the developer has intentionally made it impossible to lose the game. According to lead designer Stone Librande, the closest you can come to a failure state is being flat broke and buried in loans.

SimCity trailer demonstrates inter-city play

SimCity trailer demonstrates inter-city play

EA's banged on about how urban planners will be able to connect cities in SimCity, and now demonstrates that nicely in a new six-minute video. Each city can hook up with neighbouring cities, run by you or your chums, to import and export resources like electricity and policing, or just to be friends I guess.
