Saints Row 4: Game of the Century Edition is real, US release not decided

Not content with making a "Game of the Year" Edition, Deep Silver has confirmed a "Game of the Century" Edition for Saints Row 4. Saints Row was originally called 'Bling Bling'

Saints Row wasn't always called that, Volition senior producer Greg Donovan revealed at a talk at Game Developers Conference. When presented with the opportunity to make an original IP, Volition presented "Bling Bling" to THQ--a publisher that was largely focused on making licensed kids games.

"Bling Bling is a third person action game about style, music, gangs, and guns... It is the game equivalent of a gangster rap music video," the pitch said.

Best of 2013: #10 - Saints Row 4

Best of 2013: #10 - Saints Row 4

The Saints Row series began as something of a bargain bin Grand Theft Auto knock-off, aping the best parts of more successful games without their cleverness or creativity. Somewhere along the line, likely during the development of Saints Row 2, the developers realized they could only reach so high as pale imitators, so they went their own direction by lampooning the whole thing. Saints Row 4 is the culmination of this attitude, and as much video game parody royalty as Naked Gun is for films. It's cheeky, goofy, and the full realization of Volition's choice not to live under GTA's shadow anymore.

GAT 5 released for free on PC (psst, it's SR4 DLC)

GAT 5 released for free on PC (psst, it's SR4 DLC)

Saints Row has always enjoyed tweaking the nose of the series which inspired it, so of course it couldn't ignore Grand Theft Auto V. On the day GTA 5 launches for consoles, Deep Silver has released GAT V on PC, for free today only. That's Johnny Gat, mind, in a small piece of Saints Row IV DLC adding extra guns (he's so fond of his guns, that man) and Gat costumes.

Saints Row 4 review: suped up send-off

Saints Row 4 review: suped up send-off

The trajectory of Saints Row has been watching your player character, "The Boss," fail upwards. He (or she) is not particularly clever or skilled at anything besides causing havoc, but has ended every game at a higher level of power and influence.

In Saints Row 4, The Boss has now risen to the level of President of the United States, and of course, it's not going particularly well. The presidential premise seems to fall by the wayside once aliens invade and trap humans in a virtual prison, but I don't think it was just a silly throw-away idea. It pronounces upfront that your character is actually kind of a boorish jerk. This is an ensemble production, and trouble follows when the Boss forgets that he needs the Saints more than they need him.

Saints Row 4 character creator released

Saints Row 4 character creator released

Yes, yes, the murder and mayhem of Saints Row IV are fun and all, but aren't they essentially just window dressing for a game of dress-up? Now we can have a head-start on making pretty pretty Presidents, as publisher Deep Silver has released its character creator as the free standalone 'Inauguration Station' on PC and Xbox 360. Sorry, PlayStationeers, you may need to wait a week.

Saints Row 4 drugs block Australia from global co-op

Poor Australians. Not only do they live in a land purpose-built to murder them, they still struggle with video game censorship--even after adding an adults-only rating. Volition's open-world murder simulator Saints Row IV has finally jumped through enough hoops to be approved for an Australian release, but the changes mean they won't be able to play co-op with people in other regions.
