What Resistance 3 Could Learn From Two

Back when the PlayStation 3 launched in 2006, I went home with two games--Resistance: Fall of Man and Ridge Racer 7. I'd actually been able to beat Resistance and publish my review before its release, but I still wanted a copy for myself.

That's how much I liked Insomniac's alternate history shooter, which saw the England of 1951 besieged by the alien-esque Chimera. That purchase turned out to be a good call, as I've played through the campaign a few more times since then. Read more »

The patch is the sixth game-enhancing update to arrive since the title's debut during the PlayStation 3 launch last year.

Ratchet Demo, More Resistance Content For PSN

A demo of Insomniac Games' upcoming Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (PS3) and more content for the company's PlayStation 3 launch title Resistance: Fall of Man are headed to the PlayStation Network. "I can confirm that the demo [of Ratchet & Clank Future] will be downloadable via the PlayStation Store," said Insomniac Games marketing director Ryan Schneider in an interview with Shacknews. "What Sony chooses to do with it, and when, it really is in their hands. The [E3] demo is finished...and when it comes out, we have a rough idea, but you never know. I think the PlayStation Store is a fluid storefront, and anything can happen." The director then revealed that additional content is on the way for Resistance: Fall of Man. "We actually have some content that hasn't been shared yet," he stated, "so I think our fans will be happy in the coming months in terms of ongoing support for Resistance." "We're always working on enhanced functionality and new content," he added. The first Resistance map pack, which brought two new multiplayer maps to the game, arrived on the PlayStation 3's online PlayStation Store at the end of June for $7.99. Schneider also noted that Ratchet & Clank Future will make use of the PlayStation Network, though he declined to offer specifics. "We will touch the PlayStation Network somehow with the Ratchet & Clank Future franchise," he teased, "and we'll be talking about that when the time comes. I can assure you though, it won't be something cheesy like nickel and dime weapons upgrades."

Sony Publicly Apologizes For Resistance Snafu

Following the Church of England's public uproar over a virtual location in Insomniac Games' PlayStation 3 launch title Resistance: Fall of Man and console manufacturer Sony's private apology, the company has taken out a full-page ad in the Manchester Evening News to publicly apologize. "It was never our intention to offend anyone in the making of this game, and we would like to apologise unreservedly to them for causing that offence, and to all parts of the community who might also have been offended," wrote Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves, according to GamesIndustry.biz. The controversy stemmed from developer Insomniac's use of Manchester Cathedral as the inspiration for a portion of a level in the violent first-person shooter, which is set in 1952 and depicts humanity's defense of Britain against the seemingly alien Chimera. The Church of England alleged that Insomniac and publisher Sony Computer Entertainment failed to secure the proper permissions to virtually recreate the cathedral, and in light of what Manchester bishop Nigel McCulloch described as the community's well known gun problem, demanded Sony support anti-violence campaigns as well as the cathedral's educational department, in addition to apologizing and modifying the offending in-game assets. "It is clear to us that the connection between the congregation and the cathedral is a deeply personal and spiritual one," Reeves noted. "As a result, it is also clear that we have offended some of the congregation by using the cathedral in our science fiction game."

Sony Kneels to Church of England

A letter to the Church of England has PlayStation 3 manufacturer Sony apologizing for the inclusion of a location inspired by the Manchester Cathedral in PlayStation 3 launch title Resistance: Fall of Man, developed by independent studio Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. "It was not our intention to cause offense by using a representation of Manchester Cathedral in chapter eight of the work," read Sony's letter to Manchester Cathedral dean Rogers Govender according to Associated Press coverage. "If we have done so , we sincerely apologize." An alternate history first person shooter set in the 1950s, Resistance: Fall of Man tells the story of mankind's struggle against the alien-like Chimera, a menace that is invading and overtaking Britain. During the game, players travel through locations set in various British cities, one of which includes an old church modeled after Manchester Cathedral. The inclusion of an area inspired by Manchester Cathedral in the violent game drew protests from the Church of England last week. The Church claimed that Sony and Insomniac had failed to secure approval to recreate the landmark in-game and made several demands in retribution, ranging from an apology and a donation to the cathedral's educational department to the removal or modification of the game to omit the offending assets. While Sony has now officially apologized, the status of the other demands remains unclear. "It is well known that Manchester has a gun crime problem," Manchester bishop Nigel McCulloch said at the time. "For a global manufacturer to re-create one of our great Cathedrals with photo-realistic quality and then encourage people to have guns battles in the building is beyond belief and highly irresponsible." "We believe a comprehensive viewing of the work will make its content and context clear," detailed Sony's letter, which expressed the manufacturer's doubt "that there is any connection between contemporary issues in 21st century Manchester and the work of science fiction in which a fictitious 1950s Britain is under attack by aliens."

Church of England Protests PS3 Resistance

The inclusion of Manchester Cathedral in a portion of Resistance: Fall of Man (pictured left), independent developer Insomniac Games' PlayStation 3 first person shooter, has the Church of England seeking action from publisher Sony. According to Church officials, Sony and Insomniac never received the proper approval to recreate the location, prompting the Church to demand Sony not only apologize, but donate a portion of the games' profits to the cathedral's educational department, support anti-violence campaigns in Manchester, and remove or modify the location from the game so that it no longer resembles the cathedral. "Here in Manchester we do all we can to support communities through our parish clergy, we know the reality of gun crime and the devastating effects it can have on the lives--it is not a trivial matter." Manchester bishop Nigel McCulloch said to ITV News. "It is well known that Manchester has a gun crime problem. For a global manufacturer to re-create one of our great Cathedrals with photo-realistic quality and then encourage people to have guns battles in the building is beyond belief and highly irresponsible." Resistance: Fall of Man was released alongside the PlayStation 3 hardware last November in Japan and North America, and this March in Europe. Both the single and multiplayer modes make use of the area based on Manchester Cathedral. In the single player story, players are ambushed by a variety of non-human Chimera upon entering a dilapidated version of the landmark as they quest to rid London of the vicious creatures. In multiplayer, gamers play as either humans or Chimera to meet the goals of the chosen mode, which range from objectives requiring strategic team-based play to simply killing other players. "For many young people these games offer a different sort of reality and seeing guns in Manchester cathedral is not the sort of connection we want to make," Manchester Cathedral dean Rogers Govender explained to The Associated Press. "Every year we invite hundreds of teenagers to come and see the cathedral and it is a shame to have Sony undermining our work." "We have spoken to the Manchester Cathedral authorities and will be dealing directly with them from now on," a Sony representative told Shacknews. "We do not anticipate making any further public comment in the immediate future."
